Talk to me about what your 11 month old is eating/drinking...
Lucy eats cereal or yogurt in the mornings followed by 5oz of pumped milk
She eats lunch (turkey dog, lunch meat, veggies, and/or fruit, etc.) and has another 5oz bottle
Sometimes she'll have a third 5oz bottle before I pick her up and she'll snack on puffs or Cheerios or graham crackers if hungry at other times
She eats dinner with us and then I nurse her to sleep...is this a typical amount of breastmilk (~20oz per day)?
When I switch to cow's milk (1 year? After?), how much of that will she get a day?
Should she be eating more food and less breastmilk?
I'm confused and she seems to really enjoy eating food...but by the end of the day when we're going through the bed time routine, she's ripping my shirt off of me, even though she just ate dinner 2 hours before.
I am also scared to stop pumping at work (twice a day)and wondering how long we'll do the nursing-to-sleep thing...
Re: Weaning / feeding / cow's milk
My LO is just a few weeks older than yours. Her is her schedule:
1st thing in the morning she nurses
Breakfast: 2oz oatmeal and 2oz fruit and 2oz yogurt (just this week though I have been giving her whole wheat waffles some mornings instead of oatmeal)
Mid morning - 4.5 oz pumped BM when at daycare (Nurses on the weekends)
Lunch - 2 types of veggies, shredded chicken or turkey, 2 oz. fruit and 2 oz yogurt.
Mid afternoon - 6 oz pumped BM when at daycare (Nurses on the weekends)
afternoon snack - some type of fruit (banana, blueberries, rasberries, etc.)
Dinner - same as lunch except no yogurt
Nurses before bedtime.
I stopped the nursing to sleep around 9 or 10 months. It was really hard at first but after a few nights she learned to put herself to sleep. I would talk to her and rub her cheek to keep her awake while eating and now if I notice her dozing I unlatch her and see if she actually wants more or is just comfort sucking.
I also started introducing whole milk last week, I started just substituting 1oz of BM in her bottles for whole milk. This week I increased the amount to 2oz in each bottle. Yesterday she had 3 bowel movements (very unlike her) that were yellow tinged and developed a diaper rash. I talked to my Pedi about it this morning and she suggested dropping back down to 1oz whole milk to see if it clears up and if not cut it out all together. She doesn't think its a milk intolerance though because she has been eating whole milk yogurt since 6 months.
We are almost the same as you, though DS will be 1 on Sunday.
Right now we still nurse upon wake and to sleep. At day care he gets 15oz pumped BM (nurse during the day on weekends) and has almost the exact same eating habits as you.
I have the EXACT same concerns... not sure when to stop nursing to sleep, afraid to stop pumping and not sure if I should be giving him less BM. Daycare just asked to up it from three 4-oz bottles to three 5-oz bottles about a month ago.
Hoping to hear some advice at his 1 yr appt on Monday. Will be stalking this post until then....
KiKi, please repost after your appt! Lucy's one year appt isn't until 04/06!
I don't necessarily want to stop the nursing to sleep just because it really works for all of us! Ha! Other than that, I am wodering if it might be time to move on though it seems like she's so hungry and it freaks DH out how much she eats (we got her a child's spaghetti for lunch on Monday and she almost at the whole thing and he was shocked)...would I supplement the bm for cow's milk or more food or both? Hard to know, ha!
My LO turned 1 a few weeks ago. We are in the process of weaning and adjusting to a new big boy daycare schedule. For the last 2 weeks, I have been adding WCM to his cups in increasing amounts. Just this week he started taking entire cups of WCM--yay! I am going to continue to nurse him first thing in the am and before bed for at least the next few months. He currently gets up and eats breakfast (and then nurses)--I've started doing this order to prepare him for the day he doesn't nurse in the am so that he's used to eating breakfast when he gets up.
He then gets a food snack with a cup of water mid morning. At lunch he gets solids and a cup of milk. Right now he's getting a cup of WCM with his snack in the afternoon, but I will cut this out and give him water soon. He still nurses at dinner and then before bed. The dinner nursing session will be the next to go and will be replaced with a cup of WCM.
I would think twice about still nursing him to sleep at this age. I know it's so nice (!) but from what I was told by our doctor, the longer you do it the more sleep problems you may encounter. Our doctor strongly encouraged us to stop by 6 months. He told us it will be an adjustment, but it will be better in the long run bc you won't have a 3 year old who can't fall asleep on his own. We did it just by switching his bedtime routine around. Instead of feeding him right before he goes to sleep, i started feeding him before his bath. it worked surprisingly well, and now i put him in the crib awake and he turns over and goes to sleep. obviously your choice, but just wanted to share what i was told . . .
good luck!
Your LO's intake seems pretty similar to mine, as do your concerns about pumping etc. He nurses first thing in the morning (approx 6:30 AM). Around 8:30 he has a food breakfast, then milk (nurse or bottle) around 9:00/9:30. Food lunch around 11:30/12:00, then milk (nurse or bottle) around 1:00. He has a snack after his nap (around 3:30), and sometimes another snack around 5. He eats dinner with us at about 6:30. I also nurse him to sleep, and am in no hurry to stop it. Maybe I'm creating a bad sleep pattern, but so be it...I love that time with him and I don't want to give it up! On the rare occasions that DH and I go out at night, he does fine going to sleep with a bottle of pumped milk, and will drink at least 4 oz, so I think it's still an important feeding for him.
I originally thought that I would start weaning to WCM when he got to be a year old, but now I don't know. He'll be a year on 3/20, and we're going on vacation about 3 weeks later. I may still try the WCM, but I think I'll keep up my pumping schedule (3x a day at work, ugh) until after vacation to make sure that my supply doesn't tank and I can nurse him throughout the vacation, at least.
Also, if your LO is eating 15 oz of pumped BM a day, and you are able to get that in two pumpings, I bow before you.
