NBR:

How many calories a day do you eat? I was talking to a friend about someone we know who has lost a ton of weight, and they are eating around 1000 calories a day...we both were amazed.

Re: NBR:

  • when I was really dieting hard I was eating 1200-1500 calories a day.  I lost weight pretty quick and then stalled.  I didn't realize it at the time but I actually needed more calories because my body was going to starvation mode.  Shortly after I got pregnant with A and started eating more, and began LOSING weight again.  haha!

  • 1,000 cals a day is insane unless they are very tiny women. MyfitnessPal recommended 1400 for me and then you get "extra" if you work out. As a general rule of thumb I do about 1350 if I don't work out, 1550 if I do. I tried for 2 weeks to go down to 1200 and I worked out 5x a week (bootcamp classes, 50min Jillian Michaels DVDs) and I didn't lose a single ounce.

It's more about choosing good calories then eating an exact amount. When I was teaching nutrition I would always tell them to think of their calorie allotment as a money allowance. You want the most for your "money"

  • My body is not happy if I go under 1500.

  • Do they work out too?  If you work out, your calorie intake should be higher (than if you have a sedentary lifestyle).  And are they just drinking diet soda all day, type of stuff?  Sometimes I think I'm probably about 1500, but I work out too, so I'm guessing it's higher.  I don't really calorie count though.
  • What is the best way to count calories?

I think I need to see a nutritionist. Or do weight watchers. When dieting I eat like 600 or something - lose a lot of water weight in the beginning but then stall and can't lose more. My metabolism is so messed up from my dieting :(

  • I think that sounds really, really low.  I would not go that low, unless guided by a nutritionist.  I have had the best luck with WW when it takes into acct. calories, fat and fiber...and now I think they count protein....
