how big of a cooler for placenta?

getting some stuff together for the hospital bag and am trying to figure out how big of a cooler i will need to bring for the placenta.  i have a couple of large lunch sacks, a large soft sided cooler on wheels, and a big igloo.  i think the lunch size ones are going to be too small but the others just seem enormous to lug into L&D.  what did you ladies who took your placenta home do?

  • Yeah, I think it sounds like you'll either be too short on space or have WAY too much space with those options. One of those mid sized coolers with the lid that's a built in handle that slides to the side sounds like it would be about right for a placenta. Unless you pack goodies and drinks in the big one and make a party out of it! LOL

  • I would say those lunch sized coolers. Like a 9 quart.

  • Anything that would fit a gallon sized ziplock bag...mine took up 1/2 the space of a gallon ziplock.

  • Could you bring two gallon ziplock bags?  And put the placenta (in a bag) into the bag with ice?  That's what I am going to do.

wow, really only that big?  i envisioned it would take up more space than that!  i keep teasing DH that his coors light soft cooler is the perfect size...but he's not willing to share lol.  thanks ladies.

IDK about the OP but we're planning on having the placenta encapsulated to be taken postpartum.  It's becoming more and more common and has many benefits, one of which is help with baby blues and postpartum depression and I struggled with both after my DS was born.  Others bury theirs in their yard and plant a tree on top to signify their new growth, eat it in smoothies, some cultures cook it and share it with loved once, and others consume it raw.  The placenta is celebrated in many cultures as the thing that gave and sustained life inside your womb.  Not everybody just throws it away.

  • Do you have a doula?  Mine took my placenta home when she left the hospital.  She put it in one of those disposable tupperware containers and put it in our freezer.  Or if you have any family in the waiting room, someone could run it home for you.
  • Many times the hospital will double bag it for you in biohazard bags!  A large lunchbox should be more than plenty room wise.

ETA:  I should add that both placentas I've encapsulated were in the igloo sized lunch boxes that you think of when you see organs for transport!  Middle to large size.  The hospital was kind enough to fill them up with ice, too!

  • I was told by my birthing center that it needed to be the lunch size cooler.  We need to have ice in it.
