FTM-Sore Nipples

My daughter was born a month early and we are trying to EBF.  We did supplement with some formula because she was Jaundice and it helped her BM more.  Now I am off that and my milk is in.  She feeds fantastically and the LC told me that she has an amazing suck reflex for a preemie.  Now my nipples are so sore!  I know this is part of the BF journey but how do I know if the sore is from a shallow latch vs normal soreness?  She has such a tiny mouth I worry that she is not latching properly and I am just unaware. If it is normal tenderness what suggestions do you have to ease the pain?  I use lanolin cream but I will try anything to ease the pain during latching (esp since it takes a few tries to get her to latch).

Re: FTM-Sore Nipples

  • I struggled so much with this in the beginning. This for me was worse than labour! The thing that got me through was Lasinoh cream and ice packs! eventually I think they just "toughen up" I can remember the soreness like it was yesterday.. day by day it got better but thats what I did to get through! alternatively a lactation consultant can help you with the latch. We feed perfectly now and I was so sore in the beginning so for us I don't believe it was latch related if that makes you feel better.

  • Our LO's have very similar mouths! I think part of it could be the latch, and I agree with PP about seeing a lactation consultant. My LO has had latching issues since day one and my nipples hurt so bad I can feel the nerve in my shoulder blade. If its a shallow latch, you'll notice if your nipples are purple/blue and if there are ridges/almost bite lines on the end by the areola, it'll prove if LO is sucking on the nipple or if she is latching properly with the areola as well.

  • It's common to feel pain right after latching but you shouldn't be feeling pain throughout the entire feeding.

To help with sore nipples, use lots of lanolin after each feeding. Express a little breast milk onto your nipples after a feeding and rub it in. Let it air dry.

  • I had the same problem at thr start of my BFing adventure. It gets alot better about a month in. I would suggest watching YouTube videos on breastfeeding it helped my alot with learning to latch and postion baby properly. Good Luck and hang in there :-)
