Babies: 6 - 9 Months

anyone still use swing? also when do they outgrow 30 min nap?

my daughter is almost 6 months old and will only nap for 30 min in crib. if we put her in swing she will nap for hours. but i think she might be getting to big for the swing.

anyone else's baby only take 30 min naps and then suddenly start taking better naps?

she is a great sleeper at night, but naps- not so much!

Re: anyone still use swing? also when do they outgrow 30 min nap?

  • Yep...we went through nap hell when we transitioned to the crib from the swing.  We had to establish a new naptime routine similar to our bedtime routine and do some sleep training as well.  He started lengthening naps consistently around 7.5 months.

  • The swing went away this week. We kept working on naps in her crib. She would always wake up after a 1/2 hour. Now there are too many distractions when she's in the swing in the living room. I nurse her, rock her until she is drowsy but awake and put her down. She usually cries for a few but then rolls right over and falls asleep. She usually always naps for 2 hours and todays morning nap was just 3.5 hours!

  • Swing went away about 2 months ago. The transition for bassinet to crib was painless. She takes 30-45 minute naps twice a day, and one long one (usually at least 2 hours) in the afternoon

  • My DS is still taking 30 minute naps twice a day. He's been doing this since he was a few weeks old, and I see no end in sight. He will sleep longer if we're out and he's in his carseat, or if I nap with him, but that's it.

  • Last week she decided she didn't want the swing anymore so we are in the crib. Easy transition. Staying asleep a challenge although she did 1hr45mins yesterday - I was shocked!

  • We never used the swing, but she used to only nap if someone held her. We are transitioning to the crib and her naps are only about 25-35 minutes. She doesn't STTN either. But I have to hope that it will get better and that this too shall pass.

  • I thought DD would never nap in her crib (she liked to nap on us) or sleep longer then 30 minutes.  Around 7.5 months we did Ferber (but only needed it for middle of the night waking) and all of a sudden sleeping on us was way too distracting and she started napping in her crib.  She actually naps best there.  She'll usually do a long nap (1.5 - 2 hours) then a range between 30 minutes and 1.5 hours.  Sometimes we get two naps, sometimes 3 or 4, just depends on the day.  I try not to stress.  Something that has really been helping is putting her to nap at 1.5 after she's been awake in the morning, if I do that I can usually get a 2 hour nap, which is nice, I either eat breakfast and shower or nap myself.
  • Put up blackout panels before you try anything else.  Changed DD's naps from a half hour to an hour and a half instantly.

  • I just wrote almost this exact post on the Attachment parenting board! DD exclusively naps in her swing - though it's turned OFF - and sleeps with us in bed at night.

For naps I rock/nurse her to sleep, but when I lay her down in the crib her eyes pop open every time and she starts crawling around like she was never asleep! It's so frustrating! When I lay her in the swing, she sleeps for hours.

Our swing has a 25 lb. weight limit and she's about 20 lbs. now. We're trying to transition her to nap in the crib, but it just isn't working. Please let me know if you succeed!

I'm thinking that I just have to put the swing in storage and go cold turkey, but I'm not looking forward to that!
