Breastfeeding

A few questions all in one.... (ftm)

SoI just had my baby on Sunday and started breast feeding and I had afew questions. The one I am really curious about right now is how Iknow when my milk comes in?

ThenI was wondering why my little one started to spit up today. Does thatmean he's eating too much? This morning he kept crying and showingthat he wanted to eat by smacking his lips and all that so I wouldfeed him and he would then spit up.

Mylast question is that my breasts are starting to get kinda firm andhard is this normal?

Thanks for any help you can give this first time mom :-)

  • You answered your first question with your last.  Your breasts getting firm means your milk is starting to come in, although it'll take some time for them to regulate to the amount your LO actually needs.

Your LO probably started spitting up a little because often when milk comes in it's more than LO actually needs.  As long as LO doesn't seem concerned about it, it's ok for there to be some spit up.

Just keep feeding when he's hungry.  It'll sometimes feel like nursing is all you do, but it will help establish your supply.  Keep an eye on how many wet diapers he has.  He should be making as many as he is days old (1 diaper for 1 day old, 2 diapers for 2 days old, etc.) until he's a week old when he should make 6+ every day.

Congrats on the new baby, and I hope breastfeeding goes well for you.

  • Yup, you milk is in.

Make sure to stop and burp the baby every 10 minutes or so. Spitting up is often because of a trapped burp under some milk.

You can't feed too often. Just keep putting him to the breast every time he squeaks.  Congrats!

  • Ditto to everything above.  All completely normal!  You will likely feel like all you do is nurse all day every day for a couple of weeks.  That's how it was for us.  Letting your LO eat whenever he wants will help keep your supply out.  The kellymom website has answers to just about every question you will possibly have :)  Congrats and enjoy!

  • Thank you everyone so much! I am so glad I could come ask you all here! I'm the first one in my family to breastfeed so my mom can't help me with any of this! I just got a little nervous because this was my first full day at home!
