2nd Trimester

When is the week we want to get to for higher baby survival if born early?

Sorry I don't know how else to put it...I don't remember what it is from my first pregnancy...is it like 24 weeks or something like that?  Looking for the magic number that ups the baby's survival rate if born early...and the number 24 sticks out in my head!

Just wondering what it was if you know, thank you!

  • Everything I read says 24 weeks is considered viable.

  • 24 weeks is the standard age of viability I have read about a few babies born during week 21 who have survived, but it is rare.

  • It is 24 weeks (which is what I am today!).

  • When I was in OB ICU in Indianapolis, I was told by one of the nurses that 24 weeks is viable if you are near a large hospital that has the equipment necessary to keep the baby alive. (apparently it's uncommon for small hospitals to have the tubing and skill that is necessary to put a premie on a ventilator), and 26 weeks if you are in a rural area and the baby can't be transported to a large hospital with a NICU unit right away.

  • 24 weeks is considered viable but certainly a rough road with many possible complications. I would feel much better making it to 30 weeks or at least 34. I am a NICU RN.
  • 24 weeks, but with each week the odds of survival increase and the chance for complications decrease.

  • 24 weeks is viability but my MFM says that she wouldn't want a baby before 30 weeks so that's what I'm sticking with as my goal.

This.  Also, the precentage of viability increases drastically during the 24-29 week range.

  • The NICU where I work takes 23 weekers. I will feel more comfortable once I reach 28 weeks. After 30 weeks is even better. Prior to 37 weeks can still be very touchy. (I'm a NICU RN).

  • I provided respite care as my first real job to a lil boy born at 24 weeks- glasses and hearing aids, and sickness induced asthma but overall a pretty healthy boy all things considered!
  • 26 weeks is the week that if born after, there is a 50% higher survival rate than if born before this time.

I know that 22-23 weeks is usually the earliest that they'll do interventions should the baby be born then.
