When to start using the Ergo?

When were you able to use the Ergo with your DC?  I've been using the Moby with DD2, but DH would like to be able to wear her too.  However, he's not so confident with his Moby skills and prefers the Ergo.  I'm not sure how to tell if/when DD2 will be ready for the Ergo.  I'm pretty sure she's hitting the weight requirement, but I worry that her little legs aren't ready for the Ergo.  We didn't buy an Ergo until DD1 was about 10mos, so obviously she was ready at that age.  Thoughts?

Re: When to start using the Ergo?

  • It started working great for us around 12 weeks when DS had really good head control. He was the size of a 6-9 month old at that point, so I'm not sure what difference that made as he's the only baby I've "ergo'd"

  • We started using it around 4 months, DS was just over 15 pounds.  His legs seemed like little nubs sticking out of it at first, but he didn't seem to mind.
  • Don't they make an infant insert?

They do but we'd rather not buy one at this point since I doubt we would get much use out of it now.

Thanks for the input!  Maybe we'll just need to give it a try.  DH is pretty sure she's big enough, but I'm the one who's not so certain.  Perhaps I'm in denial about how fast my baby is growing!

Yeah. Had it, didn't love it. Maybe it was because DS was just so big. My sister used the Ergo from the get-go with her son--when he couldn't control his head, he wasn't even big enough for it to stick out the top and bobble around, so it worked perfectly. He was a normal sized kid though, so maybe that makes a difference :)

Overall, I LOVE the Ergo--if it weren't for my pregnant belly, we'd still use it when needed (pretty much limited to the airport at this point, but still).

  • Thanks for asking this, I wanted to know too!  My DD is big so won't fit in the infant insert but is getting too heavy to wear in the Bjorn comfortably...

  • ive been wearing bea in the mei tai for about two months. my only concern would be how wide m's hips might be to get her legs spread that big. not saying m has big hips :) just saying that i wouldnt want to spread her tiny legs too wide. you might put her in just to see how comfortable she is. beatrice is literally asleep in my mei tai on me right now. she will likely be in it again on saturday.

Yeah, this was my concern.  I'm not sure her little hips/legs can spread wide enough yet and I don't want her to be uncomfortable.  I guess we'll just have to give it a try.
