Solids Feeding Qs

Good morning all. Just want to get some ideas about what kind of schedule your LOs are on as far as solid foods.

Right now, my DD has oatmeal in the morning & some formula, a mid-afternoon bottle, and either fruits or veggies pureed in the late afternoon with a bottle. So, twice a day she has something additional with her bottle. When do you increase the frequency of solids throughout the day?

Also, when do you begin to let your LO pick at pieces small pieces of solids they you may be eating? And what exactly do you let them have?

Has your LO started eating yogurt?

Ok...I think that's all! Any & all ideas would be great! TIA!

Re: Solids Feeding Qs

  • hardly anything. I've been trying sweet potatoes every other day or so and he is not eating all that much. I'm going to bring some baby oatmeal to daycare so that they can start working on it there with him. My Dr. isn't concerned with solids being a regular part of his diet, but does want LO to get some regular iron - so if he doesn't take the oatmeal at daycare very well I'll get vitamins with iron instead of just the vit D drops we use now. He is EBF, and arguably these things are needed in addition to BM at this age.

Aside from that, my pedi says that he's not concerned with me pushing solids until the 9 - 12 mo time period so that solids will be a large part of his diet by a year.

  • I let DD play with some food once or twice a day.  I put a handful of oatmeal, rice noodles, slices of pear, avocado or puffs on her high chair tray and let her try it out.  We occasionally do a puree or two while we're having dinner.

My ped said to trying and start working toward 3 meals a day, but that'll take quite some time I think.

  • At her 6 mo checkup, the pediatrician recommended two solid food meals a day, and bottles in between.

    Her typical schedule:

    Breakfast- Bowl of rice cereal

    Lunch- Solid food meal (veggie/fruit)

    Nap- Bottle

Dinner- Solid food meal (veggie/fruit or meat dinner)

    Bedtime- Bottle

  • I nurse my baby in the morning, and then at daycare she gets three bottles.  In between the first and second bottle she usually has her brown rice cereal with a jar fruit mixed in, and then sometime in the afternoon she has a jar veggie.  When we get home I feed her usually about 1/2 a jar of some kind of dinner jar food and some pieces of whatever I'm having.  Then I nurse her before bed.

We went to a brazilian restaurant over the weekend and she "ate" broccoli, carrots, polenta, green beans, mashed potatoes, and fried bananas!  LOVED all of it!

Most of her non-puree solids wind up on the floor.  She's basically playing with them at this point and getting introduced to flavors and textures.  She's definitely mastered GRAB FOOD AND SHOVE INTO MOUTH, but is still working on CHEW AND GUM THE FOOD BEFORE SWALLOWING PIECES.

I haven't given her yogurt yet because if I were to buy whole milk yogurt I'd eat it all, haha!  Her favorite finger food is steamed carrots.

  • We were doing solids twice a day and at Isaac's 6 month appt, doc said she wanted us to try to get a 3rd meal in there some where. Isaac's eating schedule is like this:

230A -- 2.5oz BM (only if he wakes up)
    7A -- 5oz BM
    815A -- 2oz pear + 1.5TBS oatmeal & 2oz apple + .5oz oatmeal
    10A -- 5oz BM
    1P -- 5oz BM
230p -- 2oz sweet potato + 2 oz peaches (we're still trying to figure out his lunch recipe. He doesn't always finish and I don't always remember this one.)
    4P -- 5oz BM
    545P -- 2oz carrot + 1oz pear + 2 TBS oatmeal and maybe some apple for dessert
    7P -- 5oz BM
    1130P -- 1.5oz BM

We're starting to lessen his milk intake. My goal is to get him to get rid of those midnight feedings, but, obviously, if he's hungry, it's there for him.
