breastfeeding...?

So i have 9mth old bby girl.  I have been ebfing since she was born.  Recently she goes longer without bfeedings.. idk if shes not hungry so just "busy."  Lately my breasts have felt so small, but she doesnt seem cranky or anything. How would i know if i dont have that much milk or if its drying up?? I dont want to give formula but im also a full time student and im runing out of my freezer stash.  When i try to pump, almost nothing comes out, is that normal? Should i go to a lc?  How do i start pumping againor rebuild my supply? I have the lansinoh affinity double pump, would that work or should i rent the hospital pump?

Re: breastfeeding...?

  • I am in the same boat as you.  DS is 9 months today.....he goes longer and is a quick eater most of the time and doesn't nurse too long.  He has wet diapers and poops.  I pump once at lunch time at work and get 3-4 oz total (when I used to get up to 8).  Then I pump one side before going to get him at day care and get about an oz....sometimes more.  I pump at night  before bed and used to get 2-3 oz...now sometimes I get none and once in awhile I get 1-2 oz.  I think my body is just getting used to the pump. I hear that happens.  I would like to be done with pumping before bed so I can go to bed earlier since he doesn't sleep well.  We have his 9 month appt. on Wednesday so I plan on asking the OB all the questions to mention.  Sorry I couldn't give you more answers, but wanted you to know you are not alone.

  • My DS is nine month today and had decreased his number of times nursing down to 3 a day, morning, afternoon, and night. We give him yogurt once in the morning and then a fruit and veggie at lunch time and another fruit and/or veggie with some meat at supper time followed by puffs or yogurt bites. I think he is just liking the solid food more and doesn't really want to slow down to nurse from his new found skill of crawling and pulling up. I also was pumping and getting over 8 oz a while back but now I struggle to get 4, so I have decided to give up pumping since he hasn't been taking a bottle while I am at work. I'm not sure this was much help, but sounds like we are all seeing the same type of things.

  • DS is 9 months. He nurses 3 ish times a day.  I never pump. He gets a protein, grain, fruit and veggie at each meal (3x a day), plus snacks like grapes, cherry  tomatoes, and cheerios through out the day. His doctor is satisified with his growth, and he has plenty of wet/dirty diapers.

  • this is normal for them to not want as much bm or formula as they begin to eat. Caitlin still gets 4 bottles of 3oz at daycare, nurses before bed, again at around 1am and again at 6am. sometimes she skips the 1am feeding as well as sometimes daycare sends her home with a bottle. as long as your little one is growing and your getting plenty of wet/dirty diapers I would not worry too much.

  • I also don't get much when I pump now-adays. I would assume that if you need more milk stashed up for when you are at school then just keep pumping for 10 minutes after no more milk comes out for a few times a day and you will start to produce more again. My LO does BF less, but she still nurses up to 6 times in 24 hours for 3-10 minutes a session depending on how hungry she is.
