Burp Cloths?

Anyone know where I can get a good burp cloth?  I purchased two off of amazon and my sister gave me a pack of flannel ones and the material on all of them has been terrible...plus, they wash even worse.  I was hoping to find something that felt more like a soft thick sheet rather than anything flannel or see thru material.

Any suggestions/recommendations?  Also, for any STM's or others who know, how many do you usually need to have if I dont want to do laundry every single day? TIA

  • with my DD#1 I used the gerber cloth diapers! Worked like a charm and not too expensive!

This.  Just the old school diapers that you would use with pins.

  • cloth diapers are the BEST ever.  The other really just allow the spit up to roll off.

  • I love my Swaddle Designs burp cloths. As far as how many...it depends on your baby. My daughter spit up A LOT so I used 2 each day because they would get so drenched and stinky. I also kept one in my diaper bag at all times. So this time I have 10 stashed up and I'm hoping that I won't need that many.

  • I definitely agree with the cloth diaper suggestion. I picked up a few packs of 12. The might not be frilly and cutesy, but I've heard they are great!

  • Hmm, how was this not on my must-register-for list?? I guess I planned on using the receiving blankets. I have so many of them and they are large. If I fold them over they should be fine. Anyone have experience with using receiving blankets as burp cloths?

  • I got some really nice ones by Carter's over at JC Penney. They're a great material and seem to wash really well!

Also, this is going to sound crazy, but my mom found some at our local dollar store for $1 each, and they look great! I washed them all in advance and they don't seem to have any strings or shrinking or anything like that. I've got about 6 burp cloths total and my mom assures me that's plenty!

Just keep in mind that a burp cloth's primary function is right there in the name- it's going to get puked on, so I wouldn't stress too much about what kind of cloth they're made of or how well they wash. As long as they prevent baby from barfing on your shirt I say they're OK!

That is mostly what we used, DS was a horrible vomiter so we needed something large to keep ourselves clean, we just folded them 1-2 times... we went through a burp cloth of some sort at every feeding so probably about 10 a day at the beginning and 5 later on.

Also we got some burp clothes that had a waterproof layer which were very nice, since everything just seeped through the cloth diapers (again we had a heavy spitter/ vomiter)

  • We just use cloth diapers as well. I'd get at least 2 dozen and keep some in every main room of the house- living room, nursery, your bedroom.

  • Ditto everyone else about using cloth diapers. And as for how many...J. was a massive spitter upper. I used 5-7 burp cloths per feeding. (You can do the math on how many that is in a day for newborns.)

Most people won't need nearly that many.

I have heard this from just about every mom I have asked. They soak up WAY more than any "burp" cloth.

  • I have used the gerber cloth diapers in the past and they were awesome!  This time around I'm using similiar ones I found that are BRU brand burp cloths, they washed well, and I'm just waiting to see how well they work before getting more.  I got 9, 3 packs of 3.

One of my gifts was these, with really pretty ribbon sewn down the middle to fancy them up a little. I thought it was a great idea and super cheap if you know how to use a sewing machine (which I don't).

  • I received Gerber cloth diapers as gifts.  I am a FTM so I haven't had a chance to use them yet.  Make sure to look at the pack when you buy them b/c I received 2 different kinds...one was extra thick and the other pack was of normal thickness.

  • I'm a fan of the Gerber flannel burp cloths.  I used those for my son.  They're fairly absorbent and don't leak through to your clothes.  When I went back to work, I sent a few to daycare every day. We used about 2 -3 a day, so I like to have 15 so I only have to launder them once a week.

Also I like the colors/patterns, so I can tell them apart from the plain white cloth diapers that we used to contain blowouts.  The Gerber white diapers get ratty pretty quickly when you use them for changing pads.

I used receiving blankets since we had a ton of them and loved them.  I did also use the Gerber cloth diapers

  • These are my absolute favorite. I received some at a shower and I had to go out and buy more. Super absorbent and so soft.

  • I really like the BRU brand they are super soft and I already washed them. Hopefully they absorb well.

My Mom also mentioned cloth diapers, so I plan to pick up some gerber ones from Target.

  • I agree with PP.  We used, & will use again, cloth diapers as burp cloths.  They're bigger & more absorbent.

$8 for one gerber burp rag is not cheap. Etsy is much more reasonable if you want something cute.
