We're doing sitting. I can't handle pee everywhere, which it inevitably would with standing for us! We'll let him start standing when he asks to, though.
We did both. If he's going on a big potty-one of ours or a public toilet-he stands on the seat and we hold him (obviously) and he sits to go on his Baby Bjorn potty. He doesn't seem to mind the difference at all but does not want to sit on a big potty, I think, because he feels like he's falling in.
I started DS sitting down but he didn't really get it until he started standing up. For some reason I think some boys just prefer standing up. And there was actually more pee when he would sit because DS would find that space between the seat and rim and pee would come shooting out. If you're going to teach him sitting down you have to teach him to point it down too.
We started with standing so he could see what is happening. Once he knew he could control it we moved to sitting. He sits most of the time at home but at school I know he stands.
K1 learned right at 3 and he's tall anyway, so we started him sitting but he figured out the standing method, pretty much on his own.
K2 started learning at 18 months and there was no way he would be able to stand and get it all in the potty. He's almost 3 and he still isn't quite at the right height, so we're still having him sit and he doesn't seem to have a problem with that.
I am finding that standing up (leaning over the adult potty, standing on a stepstool, holding on to the lid) is working so well! And I haven't had any misses yet, so no pee has left the toilet. Plus, Spence much prefers the standing method to sitting.
I'm so surprised by all the responses to this! I thought for sure that standing = huge mess. He's content sitting right now [and we did teach him to point it down, so no mess there], but I'm really glad to know that I don't need to stress about it when he's ready to stand.
We started out sitting too. I was in charge and didn't have a clue how to teach him to stand up
H started standing at preschool and it was easy to bring home. we had him stand on a step stool when he started. He's surprised me with accuracy too, but no way would I have started out that way

I think it depends on their height.
