PLEASE HELP- 2y.o won't nap and climbing out of crib for bedtime!

I am slowly losing it. My 2 year old climbs out of the crib at nap time. He used to be so good with going to bed for naps and bedtime. Now...forget it. He hasn't taken a nap in a week. He also climbs out of his crib for bedtime too. He used to be soooooo easy about sleeping/naps.

Last night I had to push him around in the stroller to put him to bed and then I moved him to his crib. We bought a twin bed for him (getting delivered on Saturday) but I know he isn't going to stay in that bed either.

Any help, tips, ideas, advice, etc? I need a break in the middle of the day especially since he gets up at 6am.

  • When first transitioning to the bed they're going to fall asleep on the floor a few nights. My 2 yo rarely naps, but I still put her down for one every day, and she has to stay in her room for at least 2 hrs. Usually shes in there reading books, or singing to herself. Occasionally she'll fall asleep on the floor or in her bed. Bedtime she's good at staying in her bed, we just go in before we go to bed to put the covers back on her. It probably took her a week to stay in her bed though, and we would find her on the floor, once I even found her under her bed asleep at nap time! Best advice I can give is to take all the toys out of his room, or put them up/ in the closet, and only take them out during play times. DD1 has access to her books and stuffed animals only. We did have a few weeks of her pulling clothes out of the drawers, but that passed, and we never made a big deal out of it, I just went in, ignored her completely, put them away and walked out again. Be firm on nap time being 1.5-2hr long, and it's his choice if he sleeps or not, regardless he's in his room, by himself with the lights off.

So...how do I get him to stay in his room...do you put a baby gate up or some sort of child proofing mechanism? All he does now is just opens the door and walks out.

I agree with all of this.  The first few weeks were a little rough as the girls liked to climb out and empty all the drawers they could reach.  i did put in some toys for them that I didnt mind cleaning up.  And I have a child proof lock on the inside of their door so they cannot get out.  Some days are better than others with napping but overall it has been a great change.  Good luck!

We put a safety knob on the inside of her door. You may be pleasantly surprised too.. I was so anxious about the transition but DD did awesome. I think she didn't like being trapped in a crib she was getting too big for. Now she can read a bit, her bed is comfy (I highly recommend jersey sheets), and she feels more in control. Be firm about staying in bed or the room and limit interaction. I struggled more when I tried to appease her instead of kindly and firmly tucking her back in.

  • We chose not to transition DS when he started climbing out of his crib.  Instead we dropped the mattress onto the floor.  The rails on his crib go low enough that they still go below the top of his mattress so I feel he is safe, and now he is no where close to being able to climb out.
