Do you NEED a mobile for the crib?

I was thinking about just getting a sleep sheep or some other comforting "white noise" thing instead. Does anyone have an opinion either way?

Re: Do you NEED a mobile for the crib?

  • I was just debating this the other day. As a FTM, I really don't know, so I am interested in what others will say.

But I am really leaning towards, not having one. First off, I think alot of them are not very cute. I found one or two on esty, but they don't move or play music. And then you have to take them down when the baby can stand (I think).

Our plan at the moment is to not have one at all and get something like the sheep that plays music.

  • No, you don't NEED a mobile! I didn't order the mobile that comes with our bedding bc I just don't like them. We have registered for a sleep sheep and she will have my old iPod in her room. That should be plenty of noise I think.

My sister had a mobile with her first and ended up taking it down bc we kept hitting the baby's head one it when going to lay her down. Which of course would tickle her face and waker her up. So, at about 2 months that thing came down and went in the closet.

  • We are getting the mobile for LO to look at rather than to listen to. It will allow him to look at something and help him learn to focus on looking at something, part of eye development.

  • If you are going to have your child sleep in your room for the first few months hold off.  Once your child is able to sit-up on his or her own the mobile has to come down because the child will start pulling at it.  My DD did not go into the crib until she was 4 months and I did not have any issues with her pulling at it or sitting up until closer to 6 or 8 I can?t remember, but a lot of moms end up taking it out sooner and I think the recommendation is 6 months.  I moved mine to the changing table so I would get some more use out of it.   If I had to do it over again I would not buy one I would look for some sort of projection item.

  • We have a mobile in Sophie's crib and she LOVES it. Hence, almost a year later, it is still in there.

    It is this one...

  • Not needed. There's many other things that work better. We had a play mat on the crib that DS liked more. I'm not even bothering with a mobile this time.

  • No, I don't think it's needed. They look cute but I plan to put up a crib tent to make sure my cats stay out of the crib so it will just be in the way.

Not to freak you out about the crib tent but we had one on our bassinet, it was made for the bassinet, and it enticed my cat to jump on the tent the tent collapsed into the bassinet and my DD got scratched right above her eye.  My cat never jumps on uneven surfaces so I was shocked and I was sitting right there and could not stop it.  She was three weeks old and it was very scary.  My doctor said to take down the crib tent that she has seen more cases like mine than hearing about them keeping the cats out.  As for her nursery we just keep her door close and the cats out.

  • I actually made our mobile using origami and it will be hung above the crib attached to the ceiling so it can't easily be pulled down.  I think it gives the kid something to look at and maybe will be a keepsake of theirs when they're older.

We also intend to get something to put in their crib to maybe play music, but I would rather not have music be something that they fall asleep to because I think that's why so many people decide later on in life that they hate classical music.  (just my weird personal opinion)

  • I'm making my own mobile and will either put it above the crib or put it above the nursing chair. We haven't quite decided. But it's definitely not a necessary item.
  • No way! By the time DD even noticed it, it was time to take it out because it was a hazard. We still have it so I'll put it in there for DD2, but I would not buy one if I could do it all over again. Instead of the mobile, we used a Gentle Giraffe in DD1's crib. I liked that it had adjustable volume and the sounds played for a longer amount of time.

Oh, thanks for sharing that. I may have to rethink the crib tent thing and come up with another way to keep them out. They have access to a screen in back porch and occasionally I see them on the screen so the crib tent may entice them.

  • We have fisher price crib rainforest crib soother.  My nephews LOVED their so when DS was born I got him one too.  He loves it.

We have a mobile over the changing table.

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • We don't have a mobile. Both my boys have sound machines that do white noise through.

  • In my opinion, you don't need a crib mobile. Lots of other mamas ive talked to have recommended other essential things like a white noise maker or something like it that comes with more soothing options. I'd rather spend my money on that.

  • You don't need a mobile.  I'm not a fan of the traditional clip-to-the-crib style mobiles anyhow.  DH and I made a mobile of paper cranes and hung it from the ceiling for DD2.  It's still up as she can't reach it.  It doesn't spin or play music but she still loves it.

We'll be making another one for this new baby, just haven't decided what style yet.

If you google mobiles or nursery decor, you should see a bunch of alternatives to mobiles.

  • Heck no.  I would go even further and say that they are completely useless.

DD was in our bedroom for the first 4-5 months, where you can't put a mobile on her co-sleeper.  Then, you have to take the mobile down off the crib when they start sitting or pulling up - which was around 6 months for us.

So, for a whooping 1 month we had a mobile and she was totally uninterested.  It's a waste of money in my opinion.

Oh, and nothing mechanical ever soothed DD.  The only thing that worked for us was boob and being held using the HBOTB method.

  • My Mom bought us the mobile that goes with our crib bedding set.  It's super cute! :)

We also registered for the little lamb that plays music and ocean sounds, etc.

  • I had a mobile and only really used it when I had to put DD in her crib awake so I could use the bathroom. It would entertain her for a minute or 2 but then eventually pulled it down on her so I had to take it out.

I bought a Winnie the Pooh music/light projector crib toy when we were training her to put herself to sleep at 6 months old. She loved it and it worked so well. I wish I had just used that from the beginning. It would have been safer and would have made sleep training easier since she would have been used to it already.

You are welcome. I stressed out for months over how I was going to keep the cats out of the bassinet. I was not worried about the whole stealing their breath old wives tale but more about my cats snuggling up to the baby the same way a stuff animal can be a danger.  I was not as concerned about the crib because I knew I could keep her door closed and the cats out but my cats have always had access to our room and I did not want to take that away while introducing a new baby.  I know many people disagreed with me over this but our cats are like our children too, in my house at least.  Anyway it ended up being a non issue neither cat was interested in getting into anything the baby was in even though they were really interested in the items before the baby?s arrival.

  • I'm doing a picture mobile. Hubs will be deployed and our families are so far away... I'm planning on putting it on an adjustable line over the crib.

  • We used our mobile for a few months but really, it wasn't worth it and we probably wouldn't have gotten one but it was a gift.  We do have a sound machine/projector combo that we used (and are still using) a ton.  https://www.amazon.com/Homedics-SS-3000-Soundspa-Lullaby-White/dp/B000QTSW64/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1329947550&sr=8-2
