Is this abnormal for a 6wk old?

dd has always been a good sleeper and doesn't eat a lot at night. For the past 2 nights, she's only gotten up once to nurse (around 3 or 4am) and only eats for about 5 minutes - 10 at the most. My older girls were ff and they were both up much more frequently through the night so this seems weird to me!

Re: Is this abnormal for a 6wk old?

  • My LO started STTN at around 6 weeks.  I just let him sleep since he had already reached birth weight.  I was quite uncomfortable and leaking in the morning at first, but it evened out.

He's been waking up this past week, so I think we hit a growth spurt.  Enjoy while you can!!

  • As long as she has gained weight since leaving to hospital and is nursing frequently during the day. She should be nursing 8-12 times a day. Maybe you have a great supply and she is full at night? as long as she is healthy try not to worry. If you need more advice contact a lactation support group or consultant there are places you can call if you can get to a group. The sleeping could change at any minute, today nurse once in the night and tomorrow you could be up several times. I hope not for your sake and that you get to rest :)

  • Her weight is good, diapers are good, and she nurses pretty frequently throughout the day. I haven't been keeping track of how many times but I will today. Thanks :) I'm definitely not complaining about the sleep! It's a nice treat after my first two terrible sleepers!

  • I don't think there is a "normal" with newborns, they're all different.  Both of my kids were STTN by 6 weeks, my first was sleeping 12 hours straight at 7 weeks and was FF and my 2nd was sleeping 8 hours at 6 weeks and is EBF.
