Formula feeding mommies...

How do you prepare your formula? Ive read and heard so many conflicting things I have such anxiety over preparing bottles. I've been boiling cold tap water for 2 mins every morning and mixing it in my dr. Brown pitcher for the day. I've read boiled water is only "good" 24 hours, I've also read you're supposed to mix formula with water that is 70 degrees? And don't let water cool more than 30 mins etc etc. basically I'm going crazy! So I'm curious what others were doing? I've thought about trying nursery water but have read conflicting things on that too.

Re: Formula feeding mommies...

  • I use water that we have run through a pur or brita filter. There's so much conflicting information out there. Our house is relatively new so I'm not worried about pipe seepage and our areas tap water quality is within normal limits.

It is natural to worry, try not to drive yourself too crazy!

  • I am using bottled water or nursery water they sell in the gallon jugs.

  • I use tap water-- I wait until it is warm then I fill my bottle. Honestly the only reason I wait until it is warm is because the formula dissolves faster that way than when its cold. If we are going to be out and about I fill up the bottle with SUPER hot tap water before we leave in hopes that it will still be somewhat warm when I need to use it. Generally it is room temp. by the time I use it and we've never had any problems. I think you are overthinking this a little too much-- unless you know that you have bad tap water for some reason I think you will be just fine to use what comes from the sink. HTH!

  • I think you're really over thinking it. I was using just straight tap water for the first month but have switched to nursery water and spring water that we buy by the gallon. I make a Dr. Brown's pitcher each day with that. I also serve it to DS right out of the fridge without warming it. We started to doing that because he had spit up issues and now it's just easier and he doesn't seem to mind.

  • I use a brita pitcher that we leave out only because our tap water has 2 temperatures - boiling hot and freezing cold.  THis way, the water gets to room temp and we use that to make the bottle.  Too much research or info will cause you to go crazy.  Do what you think is best.
  • I just use bottled water because that is what everyone else in our house drinks and pedi said it's only necessary to boil water for preemies. I just keep a bottle of water next to the formula and make bottles as needed. It's easy, only takes a minute, and I never waste any. Your wayyyy over thinking it. It is really simple just pour water, add formula, shake, and go!

  • Thanks everyone, I figured I was overthinking but hearing it from other moms really helps!

  • We just use tap water for mixing the formula (we supplement since my milk is being slow coming in). Heck, I went to the lactation consultant today and she mixed the formula with tap water, so I don't have any issues with doing so. Of course, this would be different if we lived in an area with well water or something.

  • I buy distilled water by the gallon and just leave it at room temp, then mix when she's ready to eat!

  • I just use lukewarm tap water.  I also mix n the Dr. Browns picture.  My pedi said tap water is fine and there is no reason to boil.

  • We use warm tap water also!  For a while I didn't even use warm water, but LO definitely seems to like it better warm.

My mom keeps my LO during the day and she does boil (filtered) water for the bottles she makes at her house. I think it's overkill but it makes her feel better.

I WILL say that when we are going out and about that I am a little bit weird about water then...I either fill up bottles like a PP with very hot water and take with us or use the ready-to-feed stuff.  For some reason the thought of getting water from somewhere else besides OUR sink kind of weirds me out.

The most important thing I think is just to make sure your hands and the bottles are always clean!

  • We never boiled water, just used it from the fridge from the Brita. Now we just use tap water.

  • We use nursery water that is left at room temp. Our doc told us she was good with that.

  • We use room temp bottled water and warm it by putting each bottle into a cup of hot water.  For some reason he spits up way less when he has a warm bottle than with a room temp or cool one.

  • We boil water from our r.o filter for 2 minutes and put it in the fridge, that way the water stays fresh for a little more than a day.  But I normally just drink what's left at the end of the day and make a fresh jug for DD. I use that water to premix concentrated formula then warm it in a cup of hot water.

  • Definitely overthinking it! I don't ff this time, but when I did with my other two I just used bottled water. Filled the bottle up, added formula, shake and go. We always did room temp rather than warming and they were fine. It was also easy to carry bottles of water in the diaper bag.

  • I got the recommendation to use nursery water.  We keep the  water on our kitchen counter and just mix with that at room temp.  Have had no problems here!
