CD HELP!!!!

Ok, I have no idea what this is too little or too much detergent wise???  This morning Haven woke up wet (duh) and his diaper smelled musty, so I thought maybe I'm not using enough.  But when I brought it over to the diaper pail it smelled amonia-y... as does the pail of dirty diapers.  So, is it too much?  I can't ever seem to remedy this stupid stink issue!  Its either too little or too much, why can't I find the proper amount?  HELP!

Re: CD HELP!!!!

  • I *think* that means too much detergent.

  • Diapers in the pail can be ammonia-y without there being anything wrong. Pee breaks down into ammonia naturally so if the diapers have been sitting, that might just be normal. It's when the diaper coming off your child and reeks of eye stinging ammonia that you've got a detergent issue.

The best test is to smell the diapers as they come out of the wash - I mean really stick your nose in there. If they smell clean, then the odds are good you're using enough detergent. If they smell even a little off then you might want to up what you're using. Then smell the diaper after your child has just peed in it - if it smells like pee then you're not using too much detergent. If it reeks of ammonia (trust me, you'll know - it's not subtle) then you're using too much, could possibly use more rinses or maybe should switch what you're using all together.

As for musty pee - certain foods can make urine smell musty. Have you guys eaten any asparagus lately?

Couple of days. I just put them in the wash this morning and I think the last time I did a load was day before yesterday.  Its just weird to me that it smells musty when its on but then like ammonia in the pail?  Its sending me mixed signals!

  • I wouldn't worry as much about the pail smelling like ammonia as I would if it smelled like ammonia when it came off of him.  Especially if you are keeping your pail airtight, or with a lid, it's going to smell like ammonia.  Does this make any sense =)

Ok, this makes sense.  I'm using purex FC right now b/c that's all we have and can get locally.  I just did the hot wash with a little more detergent and figured I would put it through a hot cycle with nothing and then a cold rinse with vinegar just to start "fresh" LOL.  Thanks!

  • When I had the ammonia smell it was because I wasn't using enough detergent. As soon as I started using more the ammonia smell went away. Ammonia in the pail is completely normal. It's just when you can smell the ammonia when you change DC.
