Tell me about Diaper covers

I'm going to break out of my BG rut and buy some fitteds (thanks to helovesducatis' rave last night!)  but I'm ignorant in the ways of fitteds and covers.  What covers do people like?  How many do you need?  Can you use them more than once before washing?  Any one have a good pattern to make them?

Re: Tell me about Diaper covers

  • I think Thirsties are my favorites so far (I've tried Prowraps, Litewraps, Bummis SWW as well).  I use one cover for the day unless it gets really wet or poopy and then I switch it out sooner.

  • Oh! ?Oh! ?Do it! ?Do it! ?I used BG's exclusively for 5 months, then on a whim I sold them on DS and switched to fitteds and covers. ?(I kept three for DH) ?I'm so happy I did it!

The fitteds I have are Kissaluvs, Cricketts (both cotton and hemp), and the Baby Bunz that I posted about. ?I specifically bought snapping fitteds instead of velcro because I knew snaps would last longer than velcro would. ?I'm using Thirsties covers and they work really well over all three types of diapers. ?I like using them with the Baby Bunz because they have a "pocket" in the front that you can tuck the top of the diaper into, making it stay in place easier and eliminating the need for a Snappi (I hope that makes sense)!

I'm still building my stash, but so far I have about 20 fitteds, three Thirsties covers, and a one-size Mommy's Touch cover. ?I alternate covers between changings and hang the just-used one on a hanger in the closet to dry. ?I just use my nose as a gauge for when they need to be washed.

I tried to find reviews of the Mommy's Touch cover but no one had tried it so I decided to go for it. ?I love it so far because we use Cricketts hemp with an extra insert for nighttime which is Suuuuper bulky... and the Mommy's Touch cover works really well to keep everything in. ?Plus is it two layers of PUL so there is no dampness that gets through. ?I will post a review of it after I've used it for a little while longer.?

  • we use Thirsties covers. We currently have 3 covers that fit DD properly. We rotate 2 covers at a time. So it goes like this: put on PF/fitted, use cover A, change diaper, put on PF/Fitted, use cover B, change diaper, put on PF/Fitted, use cover A, repeat.

we do this till one of two things happens:

laundry day - one cover goes in the wash, next laundry day the other one goes in the wash

poo - if poo gets on the cover it imediately goes in the pail and we get out the "spare" cover.

this way all of our 3 covers get rotated into the mix, washed, and used equally.

we only put the covers in the dryer once a month to re-seal the PUL.

  • I'm so happy I switched from BGs to fitteds.  The BGs were good to start, they got me used to CD, but fitteds are wonderful!

Ditto Thirsties covers, my favorite by far.  I alternate two for two days unless they get poop on them, which very rarely happens.

  • I also like Thirsties best.  I think because it has that extra piece of elastic.  In general though covers are not my favorite.  The entire diaper underneath ends up being soaked, with or without a doubler.
  • I have 3 different types of covers- Wonder wrap, thirsties, and wool.  I like the wonder wrap because it lasts from newborn to toddler. I like the thirsties because it keeps the wetness in better then anyother cover i have ever used. Also the thirsties are super easy to get a good fit. I don't really like wool too much because of the need to put the lanolin back in them.

Hope this helps... oh and also thirsties are really cost effective!

  • I have used thirsties covers imse vimse, motherease, and I just now bought a Mommy's Touch (haven't tried that one yet). Now that DD is very active (crawling and walking some), I hate the velcro covers-- they rub against her belly and irritate her when she doesn't have pants on (even if she has a onesie over them). The Motherease cover is snaps but it is HUGE and bulky around the waist even though the thighs still fit. That's why I bought Mommy's Touch, so we will see about that. Just something to think about for the future....
