If your LO is on Zantac for reflux....

Have they had any change in their BMs?  Also, how long on the med before you noticed an improvement?

We just started our 6 wk old on Mon night and I swear that yesterday he was doing better - so much less cringing and crying and he wasn't spitting up volumes of curdled milk ( just two small little spit ups one would expect from an infant ).

I EBF and my son typically has a BM with each feeding...that hasn't changed; however, yest and today the amount of poo in each diaper is amazing!  Wondering if this is likely due to his having started the Zantac.

I would love to hear your experience with your infant on this med!  ....and any tips as to how to get the medicine into the baby without some being spit out would be great too! Lol

  • As for the poop, I'm not sure.  We started her on it when she was a week old and the poopy diapers were just getting cranked up.  She got better the first day or two as well but it seems to have worn off a little.  I think it's due to her weight increase??  As for getting it in her mouth, we just shoot it in there very near the back of her throat.  Or...we did.  Now that she's on a higher dose I have to do that in two tries. 0.5 each squirt....  I also will suck any she spits out of her mouth with the syringe and give it back to her. lol  She also seems to take it better when she just woke up due to being groggy and sometimes doesn't even fuss.

  • My daughter has been on it for a little over a week now.  For her it took almost that whole week to really notice a change after the first day of taking it.  We also noticed a change in her poop diapers.  Monday at her 1 month check up i was told that the increase was because she is now getting more since she isnt spitting so much up.

As far as getting it in her mouth she is the worst.  SHe gets .6ml and  i use the syringe that the pharmacy gave me.  I have started giving it to her slowly like on little line on the syringe at a time.  seems so work better for her.

    hope that helps!

  • We split it up too....he's getting 1.4 mL so we do .5, .5 and .4.  I'll have to try groggy dosing, thx!

  • How much do your babies weigh - it sounds like my sons dosage is so much higher.  He's getting 1.4 mL twice a day.  He was just weighed Monday...at 6 weeks old he's 10 lbs 8 oz and 21 3/4" long.

  • We started a couple weeks ago. He had a few foamy poops, but they are back to seedy now. Healso pooped a ton the first few days on it, but then again it might have just been that I was analyzing each diaper.  He hates the taste! The easiest way for me is have him suck on the binky and squirt it in the side of his mouth. He still spits it out, but doesn't cry as much and then choke on it that way

Ds was 10 pounds 15 ounces and 22 inches and the dose is 1.3ml twice a day.

  • My dd is 11lbs 3 oz and takes 1.5 ml two times a day.  She has been on the medicine for a month now and is a totally different baby.  They did up her dosage due to her weight, so if u think it's wearing off call the pedi and they will up the dosage to their current weight.  I think we saw a change after the first week with her fussiness.  She poops a lot!!!! She also still spits up fairly often, but her dr said as long as she isn't bothered by it then she is ok.  Personally, I don't like that she is still spitting up, but if the dr said it was ok then I guess it is.

  • As for the poop I am not sure as we also changed formula to Elecare at the same time we added Zantac.  We are on .7ml three times daily.  The first day we noticed a little difference but I think it was more due to the formula change than anything else.  It's been since Friday that he has the Zantac and formula change but so far he seems just as fussy.  My dr says to give it 2 weeks and if he is still having reflux we will change to another medication.

A trick I just learned with the administration of Zantac is to put it in a bottle nipple.  This is working like a charm...when we tried to give it to him any other way he spit it out..this way he is sucking it all out with no problems.

  • My little guy has been constipated since starting it but he also has an umbilical hernia and at least one inguinal hernia so perhaps the constipation has to do with that.  I use the bottle nipple too and it works like a charm, no more fighting it...he just sucks it down happily.  He is probably about 6.5 lbs and gets .8 2x daily

  •  I was told it takes about 2 weeks to take the full effect.

To give him the meds I lay him on his changing pad and squirt it in his mouth, then I close his mouth to sort of force him to swallow. It sounds cruel, I know.

I've noticed he spits up and seems to be fussier right around the time I give it to him. I think it's because it's worn off from the last dose and the new one doesn't kick in right away. He's happiest in the middle of the night and the middle of the day.

If it's really bad I give him Maalox.

I didn't notice any diaper changes but he's always been an overachiever in that category!

10lbs 3 oz and he gets .5ml 2x a day. I am wondering if we need to up the dose though.

I am not a Doctor but I would say yes because DD is 8lb 7.5oz and is taking .7ml 2x a day. We just started yesterday evening and I've seen a small difference. She still grunts and curls her legs up but no screaming pain or crying. Although she does seem to be a little constipated this morning so I gave her a ounce of apple juice. I hope it works, I just want her to be pain free:()
