Weight gained vs. birth weight

For those moms who have already had their babies....  Was there any relation to the weight you gained durring your pregnancy and your babies birth weight?  I'm just a little worried that my baby may be quite big and I really don't want a c-section.  I'm 5'3'' and have gone from 115lbs to 155!  I was due yesterday and I'm just scared this baby is going to be really big.  Oh, and I haven't put on weight anywhere other than my belly so that almost worries me more.

Re: Weight gained vs. birth weight

  • I'm not sure.  I ate whatever I wanted, gained 33 lbs and both kids were 8 lbs 9 oz.  I am sure I got a little bigger everywhere, but mostly in my belly.  The bigger the baby, the less weight to lose - win/win.

I know it's scary but try not to stress about the size of the baby.  I really did the first time and it turned out to be NBD.  Chances are, your Dr. would know if you were carrying close to a 10 lb baby based on your fundal height and that's when a c section talk might come up.  Of course people deliver bigger babies than that vaginally.

  • A) I was a fatty to start with, gained 21 lbs, LO was 7lbs 4 ozs.

    B) Im already 5lbs less than my conception weight, so I dont think there's much correlation.

  • I gained 40 pounds and Charlie was 7 pounds 13 ounces.
  • I don't know if there is any correlation. I gained 25 lbs total, and Will weighed 9lbs, 3 oz at birth. I figure one third of the weight I gained was baby alone!
  • I gained 36lbs and LO weighed 8lbs 8oz. I dropped 18lbs the first day and a week later, I am down a total 24lbs.

  • There was no relation for me.

    With DD 40lbs= 6.5lb baby

    With DS 23lbs= 6.14 baby

Some people just retain more water during pregnancy. BTW, I don't think 40lbs is a lot.

  • Not really. I gained 27 pounds with #1 and he was 7.5 pounds. I stopped tracking my weight gain with #2 when I hit 40 pounds and he was 8 lbs, 1 oz.

  • I had only gained about 30 pounds until the last 6 weeks then packed on an extra 20 (yikes! darn cravings).  LO was 9.5 oz 2 days early, but FI was a big baby and I was measuring big on the ultrasound, fundal height, and baby wouldn't drop so we had an idea.  Honestly, if you aren't measuring big on everything, I wouldn't be concerned.  Usually doctors worry first, so if they aren't, you shouldn't.
