Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Carseat is HEEEEAVY!

So when did transition LO to a convertable car seat, facing backwards of course.  I'm only 5'1" and I have an SUV and I put her in the middle for more protection.  She's about 15lbs now and that infant carrier is getting heavy to put her in and take her out of, let alone carry into a store, etc.

She can sit assisted and I was trying to wait until she could sit unassisted.  But I don't know how long that will be?

Re: Carseat is HEEEEAVY!

  • Just leave the car seat snapped into the base, and use it like a convertible car seat.  I only pull out the car seat if the child is sleeping. If  they were awake, then I put them in the Ergo or stroller when we are running errands.

However, we recently transitioned DD2 to the convertible seat, as our infant car seat expired (used with all 3 kids).  She cannot sit unassisted, so I just made sure I had the recline of the seat at the 45* angle to avoid slump and head bopping forward.   It has been fine.

  • I can't wait to ditch the infant carrier!  That thing weighs a ton!  We're just waiting for the weather to get consistently better so we're not messing around with getting her in and out of the convertible car seat outside in the cold, nasty weather. By next winter, I think we'll be old pros at getting her in and out, plus she'll be bigger then and able to help us get her in and out a little more.

She just turned 5 months, she's 15 pounds and she sits really well with help, but not so much on her own yet.  I think it'll be about another 4-6 weeks before we make the switch.

Ditto this. We kept DD1 in her infant seat until 13 months when she hit the height limit, and stopped using it as a carrier around 8 or 9 months when it got to heavy (my girls are peanuts). I full expect DD2 will use it just as long or longer. I wanted to wait as long as possible to switch so we would get as much life as possible out of our convertible seats before they expired.

Yep, there's no reason to haul that thing around unless the baby is asleep or you are going in somewhere and may need to set her down.
  • You can transition anytime. Most convertible car seats say you can put a newborn that is at least 5lbs in the seat. Ds is already 20lbs so we transitioned 2 weeks ago. He is not sitting unassisted yet either so we just have the seat reclined.

  • We'll be making the transition soon...we've already got his new carseat. Carter is around 20lbs and I have permanent bruises on my right thigh from his heavy carseat crashing into my leg as I walk. He can sit up unassisted for short periods of time, but still has a little trouble sitting in the shopping cart...he does fine in highchairs. When we go out to eat, we don't bring his seat in with us, since he won't stay in it. When it gets a little warmer outside, I think we'll move to his big boy carseat.

  • Go ahead and switch. We've used a convertible since birth.

I don't understand people 'waiting' to go to the convertible seat until their LO can sit up better.  Most convertibles are safe from birth or 5lbs if installed correctly.  I get waiting if you use the car seat outside of the car (in a stroller, in a restaurant, etc), but if you don't and you're tired of using the infant seat, then just switch =)

That's what I meant... My LO cannot sit up yet unsupported, so putting her in a grocery cart, or me carrying her into a store is out of the question.  She's not strong enough for me to do eveything one handed yet.

Thanks for your ideas ladies!  =)
