Should we wait?

So I have my a/s scheduled for March 21st, but I am just too impatient so I found a place off base that will do a 3d/4d ultrasound and tell you the gender starting at 16 weeks...which I am as of Thursday! With the Yen rate it would only cost right about $60 so not horrible. Would you ladies wait til the a/s or would you do the elective one (where the Japanese techs can basically say only 'girl' or 'boy' and give you a few pictures)? I really want to do the one off base, but I am nervous about it only being at 16 weeks, do you think there is still a big possibility that it could be wrong then (meaning telling us the wrong gender)?

Re: Should we wait?

  • That early it is possible they could be wrong. I would try to find people who have been there already and ask them if it was right for them. Even then I would just take the knowledge they give you and wait til your scan at your doctors office to confirm! Good luck! If one was that cheap around here I'd probably go.

P.S. what base are you at? and do you like it? DH and I are always trying to collect info on other bases, lol. Hes been at this one for 6 years and I'm just shy of 2 years here.

  • I wanted to schedule my a/s at 19 weeks on my birthday because I thought it would be cool...my OB wouldn't let me, they won't schedule anything before 20 weeks because he said that before that there's still to great a chance to not see something right or to get the wrong gender still. I'd wait.

We are in Okinawa, Japan. The weather is nice. The being over 7000miles away from family and friends suck. The 30+ hour travel time back to see family sucks even more lol. But you make the most out of wherever the Air Force sends you! We are enjoying our time here, but we will NOT be extending! Also depending on who you talk to here they either love it because they are big into water sports (I am terrified of the ocean animals here) or they are counting down til they leave...we leave in about 30 months lol

  • The anatomy scans primary important is taking specific measurements of the organs and bones. Determining the sex is a bonus. My doc does the scans from weeks 20-22 only because then they get the most accurate measurements of the important stuff. It has nothing to do with the opportune time to see if it's a boy or a girl. If 60 bucks isn't that much money to you than do it!

  • We found out on Monday that we were having a girl and we were only  15w5d. I say do it. I could clearly tell here was no frank or beans in the ultrasound. Besides its really nice to get some updated Ultrasound pictures..

  • I am scheduling an appointment with a place an hour away that charges $75.00 to find out in two weeks when I will be 16 weeks. My husband and I made an agreement that this is the only child we will find out early with and if we have a third child we won't find out at all. I think it was a good compromise. I don't mind spending the money- we get a decent amount back for taxes and will use that and put the rest in savings.

  • If 16 weeks seems early and waiting until late March is too far, would it be worth it for you to go in say, two weeks? You'd have a better chance of them getting the gender right, and a two week countdown to know is easier to deal with than a four week!

  • Thanks ladies! I think we are going to do it! I thought about waiting another 2 weeks but my DH's work shift changes that week and he has to work 12's so he wouldn't be able to make it to the place. So we might wait one more week putting me at 17 weeks, but I know I definitely want to get the 3d/4d US done!

  • I did an elective at 16 weeks with Lucas and it was right. The tech was confident in her "guess" and it really was undeniable. I say go for it, but to each their own.

  • I say save the $60 and put it in your childs savings account.  Wait a few weeks to get the most accurate results.  Wouldn't you be disapointed if they told you the opposite gender by mistake?  Maybe it's just me but I say wait.  I'm also team green and plan to wait till August.

  • I always feel like such a debbie downer on these ultrasound posts, but I feel moved to mention that an ultrasound is still a procedure and is still best undertaken in a medical environment and pictures, and finding out the sex are super-fun, obviously - but it's not something to continuously line-up for.  Knowing that many people have to go multiple times just to get the "necessary" measurements done, I agree with previous posters - I'd save the cash and just do it as required.

all this said, I'd LOVE to spend some time in Japan!  What a place!
