Do you take a child/yourself to the ER for stitches? I've always been completely freaked out by even the thought of stitches so the couple times I probably should have gotten them I just kept some serious pressure on the injuries and used some butterfly stitches. I have some horrible scars as a result and after an incident this morning with E I've come the to realization that I should probably get over that fear in case she ever needs them.

Re: At what point...
If it is on some part of the body where you really don't want a scar (like the face) I would go to the ER for a deep cut and insist a plastic surgeon stitch me or LO up. I have been told I've had stiches in my chin twice - I can feel a little bit of a scar on the underside of it when I was around 2. I fell down the front steps and then turned around and fell down the back steps a couple of months later.
Older DS bit threw his lower lip once - it bled like crazy for about 5 mintues - I called the nurse line and they said since it was a jagged cut they would not be able to stitch it- it healed up on its own within 24 hours.
Thanks ladies, I've never even seen stitches so I don't even know what they look like or what would qualify as needing them. Our insurance doesn't cover urgent care around here and whenever you call about anything you get "Feel free to go to the emergency room on post". In Georgia we were allowed to go to urgent care and it was amazing, so stupid we cant go here.
She knocked over the trash can while I was in the bathroom and found the 1 thing that could actually hurt her...an empty open can of corn that had been opened with a super crappy can opener. She shoved a finger down in it and got it wedged between the sharp lid and inside of the can. I was trying to finish cutting the rest of the lid off so I could just pull it and her finger out at the same time and avoid cutting her even worse and she screamed and ripped her finger out instead. I held a paper towel around it and held it above her heart for about half an hour then put a band aid on it. She bled through the first band aid but it hasn't really bled much since. I checked on it before putting her to bed and it's not as deep as I thought but more of a wide chunk of skin missing.
That would have given me a heart attack too. It sounds like if it stopped bleeding and it didnt look as bad later, its probably fine. I once was cutting Whitney's nails and got her good. It bled pretty bad too. Scared the crap out of me.
Also, thats dumb you can't go to urgernt care!
This!
I got stitches a few months ago after the top of my foot had a run in with H's stupid deer head he hasn't hung up yet. It punctured my foot pretty deep and I got 6 stitches. My kids have never needed them thank goodness.
Also what BS about urgent care. And sorry poor E got her finger cut like that ouch! Hope she's feeling better today!
