DD swallowing water down wrong pipe?

This is probably going to make me sound neurotic, but DD was in the tub tonight playing with her cup like she always does...she usually picks it up and tries to drink from it some.  Tonight she did and I think she swallowed down the wrong pipe because she started gasping for air and panicking and then stood up and as soon as I picked her up she was ok but she cried for a good while.  I took her out of the tub, got her dressed and nursed for bed (she hardly nursed at all though) and put her down.  She seems fine but this is making me nervous in case there is a possibility she got water in her lungs.  Thoughts?  Am I just being paranoid or wwyd?

  • I really don't you think you have anything to worry about. As long as the child is coughing and not turning blue, then they are breathing. She's ok...probably just got a little scared.

  • I don't think you have anything to worry about.  She probably just got scared so check on her lots and make her feel comfortable.
  • Even if she did aspirate some, she'll be fine. Like I always tell my patients, people who nearly drown don't get aspiration pneumonia. The lungs can clear out a little bit of water.

This exactly.  It was probably just because she was playing and she wasn't expecting it.  If you start to notice that she frequently coughs after drinking during her meals or when she is nursing, then I would be a little concerned for dysphagia or aspiration related disease like pneumonia.  But especially with water, a lot of people (who are mobile) can tolerate a little aspiration every so often.  Having the anatomy to speak automatically puts you at risk to aspirate, so the body can tolerate some.

Sara, what do you do? Thanks...I got really nervous about water possibly getting into her lungs...but you don't think that would be a problem?  She's asleep but seems to be breathing fine...

  • Hen has done this during swimming lessons. It seems that it scares him more than does any harm. If she's breathing fine, I wouldn't worry.

Basically, I'm a swallowing therapist. I'm an SLP working with adults, so lots of post-stroke, TBI, etc (think Gabby Giffords), but my main area is pulmonary & ventilator rehab.

  •  So she's been sleeping for 2 hours almost and her breathing sounds fine. I guess I can relax now. Right?
