Post Partum Bleeding (TMI ?)

I just gave birth a week ago today so I know I will be bleeding for a few more weeks...  Just checking to see if anyone else notices an unpleasant odor every time you use the toilet?  I use the peri bottle to rinse every time I pee but it just doesn't smell good down there and I am wondering if this is normal or if it might be an infection starting?  Thanks a bunch in advance for any responses.

  • My discharge instructions from the hospital said to call my OB if I notice any unpleasant odor.  I'd probably place a call.

  • I think part of it might be the blood smell which is gross  and also sweat when wearing a panty liner or pad so that help

And for what it is worth I haven't needed a pad since about two days after I delivered. I've been able to wear just a panty liner and today it is dramatically lighter than even yesterday and is more brownish now than red.

With my first son I only bled about 2 weeks so looks like it might be the same with this one so there is hope!

  • I also had this happen.  Worst smell ever.  My dr said it was just the lochia.  I was worried about an infection, because of what the discharge paper work said, but he literally took my vitals, examed me, smelled his finger, and said I was good to go home.

I think that it is normal, if you don't have a fever.  If you have a fever, then I'd call the dr.
  • After I had my first I literally could not stand the way I smelled down there...everywhere my doctor said it was hormones!
  • It does smell different from a regular period. It's much more of an earthy smell, although I thought it smelled pretty bad.
  • It smells pretty ... 'earthy'. I called it a primate smell to my husband. If you have concerns, contact your doctor or nurse line, but it seems like a sort of musky smell is fine, especially if the blood isn't any weird color and there's nothing like itching, swelling, etc.

BTW, my bleeding slowed down to panti liner levels within the first few days, but once I started getting up and moving around a good deal more, I noticed there'd be more blood after say, a walk around the block. Be prepared for it to fluctuate.
