Zofran

What are your thoughts regarding zofran?  My RE gave me a script but I feel kind of funny taking it because I thought it was for SEVERE nausea, like when you couldn't keep food down.

My nausea is BAD but I am able to eat foods and keep it down.  (I'm certainly not getting too many healthy foods down though.)

I took one dose this afternoon and WOW did it help!

Re: Zofran

  • I took it for my nausea. I never actually threw up, but I was commuting 45 minutes to school by car in my 1st tri, and I needed not to be dizzy while driving. As far as I'm concerned, it's a miracle drug. Try taking half a tab if you have the dissolveable kind. You might not need the whole dose if your nausea isn't severe. Half of one worked for me. Do be warned, it can make you constipated. I highly recommend Miralax.

  • I happily took it.  With multiples it's important to get all the nutrients you can and to keep them down.

  • I have been taking it approximately every six hours for seven weeks now and wouldn't trade it for the world.  It is the only way I can function and I am finally beginning to eat again.  I lost 20 lbs and finally gained 1 back!  I highly recommend it.

Why did you take it at night?  Was the nausea worse at night or did it help with the morning?

  • I took it too, although unfortunately or me, I didn't find it helped immensely. I primarily just had nausea as well.

  • As soon as I saw the subject line, the first thing that came to mind was "saved my life while I was pregnant".  I felt sick 24/7 but only threw up at certain times and only about twice a week. The problem I had was eating. I felt so sick and nothing sounded good. I only made it to 27 weeks but I only gained 5 lbs because I lost so much from not eating.  It is good to stay on top of things. If you get too sick, you get dehydrated and then it can spin out of control. Good luck!

  • Zofran was a life saver for me.  With both of my pregnancies, I couldn't keep anything down at all w/out Zofran.

Try taking half a dose - you may be able to get by with that.  (Constipation is a side effect.)

i found it made me tired and groggy if i took it during the day.  and also gave me a little bit of a headache, so i took it before bed and it got me through about a day and a half so that second day i took it again at night:)

  • Yes, it is awesome but it creates the WORST constipation! Ugh...around 16 weeks I would only take a half pill so I wouldn't throw up but I would still feel semi nauseous. Around 18 weeks, I would only take it as soon as I felt nauseous. So, a half pill every two or three days. At around 20 weeks, I didn't need it.

  • It also saved me... One could last me about 48 hours, and then I would have to take another.  Also caused horrible constipation.

  • I took it twice a day almost my whole pregnancy!  I still threw up once a day, every day!!!
  • Our RE gave DW a script as well for nausea. She wasn't throwing up, but she could barely eat. He said by the end of first tri she needed to be getting sufficient nutrients, so she took half a pill a day for a while. It helped a lot.
  • I took it for about two months.  I couldn't get through the day without it.  I was throwing up 2-3x/week on it.  If it helps why suffer.

  • I also took it and it helped a lot. It didn't make the m/s go away but really took the edge off it. I was also able to keep some food down, but it I drank any liquid, everything came up. So I didn't drink a lot and became too dehydrated. So I had to go on just so I could drink fluids.

Zofran is very constipating, make sure you are drinking a lot of water and taking a good amount of Benefiber or Miralax every day.

  • I had horrible m/s during 1st trimester... lost 10lbs bc of it, but was scared to take Zofran.  I figured I could put on my big girl panties.  Well, at 16 wks, the m/s came back 20x worse!  I seriously could keep nothing down... not even my BFF ginger ale.  At that point I asked for the script, and I was a new person.  I only had to take it for less than a wk, but so glad I did.  Now I wish I would have taken it sooner.
