Flooring in house ripped out? 26 weeks

Hello--

My hubs and I want to get our kitchen floors redone... however when the guy came to quote it yesterday he said that we currently have tile over 2 different levels of vinyl.  Meaning, our house was built in 1964 (we bought it 4 years ago) and apparhently noone ever bothered to take out the old flooring.  To do it right, we should remove the old flooring before we install the new one.  Out of curiousity, should i be concerned with asbestos/other posions that could be airborn during the demolition?

Our floors are really in bad shape, so we want to do these before the baby if possible (and since I am 26 weeks, that doesnt gie us much time!) . What are your thoughts?

  • As long as your not breathing in the dust while they are removing the floor you should be fine. Just tell them to vent the house ...we had our kitchen redone when I was pregnant with my 2 nd ..it was fine.

  • We recently ripped up old carpet and found a tile floor underneath (like the kind of tile you see in a school classroom). The carpet people refused to remove it because they were pretty certain it was asbestos. If you have any concerns, I would NOT have them remove the old flooring. My house was built in 1950, and I know there is asbestos in parts of the home. The key is not breaking the tile/siding/etc. and then the asbestos will not become airborne. If they can install the new floor over the old floors, I'd say have them do it. Why take the risk?

  • If your house was built in the 60s, be sure to ask them to check for (or better yet, take precautions for) presence of asbestos.  You don't want that stuff floating around, pregnant or not!  You might also be interested in asking about low-VOC or no-VOC products when laying new tile.

ETA:  It is totally possible to remove asbestos tile safely.  You just need to be sure the company doing it knows what they are doing and takes all of the precautions.

  • I haven't heard of toxic vinyl flooring, not that I'm an expert but I think you'll be ok. It's mostly old tile that you have to be wary of.

  • You can remove asbestos tile safely. Obviously you shouldn't be in the house when they are doing it, but it can be done.

  • In a perfect world I would say to go off to a spa retreat while workers completely re-do your floors. Only return when your house is beautiful and safe.

In the real world I would say to have them test it first. Make sure they take all the precautions no matter what. And wear a mask and long sleves/pants when you are around the house while they are doing it. Also, make sure you throughouly interview and check out whoever you are having do it. You want someone who has experience and a good track record of safely removing the stuff.
