We tried rice cereal with B for the first time this week and she took a few bites and then decided she wasn't going to have any more. Not that day, or the next, or three days after that. I don't know if its that she isn't ready for food, or if she just doesn't like the rice cereal.
I don't want to rush her, but I do think she's ready - she doesn't have the tongue reflex, she tries to grab things that I'm eating, etc. Plus she is starting to fuss for a bottle only 1.5-2 hours after her last and she has never taken them that close together before. She is already taking 36 oz a day too!
So back to my original question, has anyone just gone to veggies? Is there any dietary need for grains?
Re: Is everyone giving cereal or oatmeal?
We are giving oatmeal, but it's really just to get something other than my milk in her system. I think we're going to do baby led weaning and skip the purees all together. I've seen a bunch of sources say that you can skip cereal.

DD gets insatiable in the evenings sometimes, so I've tried rice cereal. Plus, that's when I have the most time to spend feeding her, so I don't feel rushed or pressed for time. She's been hit or miss. I gave it to her for the first time about a week ago, and she ate most of it. The next 2 days after that, she wanted nothing to do with it and was mad that it wasn't her bottle, so I gave it a break. Now, I'm trying it again. I make a half tbs with 2-3 tbs formula, and she eats about half of it. But, I'm giving it to her after she's had some of her bottle because she hasn't figured out that the cereal will help fill her up. She's just learning, so we're taking it slow and I'm letting her guide me on what she's ready for. She's gaining weight just fine, so I'm not concerned.
One of my co-workers suggested mixing the cereal with some mashed banana and see what she thinks of that. I was thinking of starting her on veggies before fruit, though. That maybe she'd be more accepting of the veggies if she got them first? Maybe it doesn't matter?
We are skipping cereal and oatmeal. I want to do BLW and will start with avocados, bananas, and sweet potatoes at 6 months.
We tried rice cereal and LO did not have much interest and it made her very gassy. I took her off solids all together for a couple of weeks and started her with green beans yesterday. She LOVED them. Smiled and giggled the whole time she was eating and had no problems with gas after. I am going to try a few more veggies before trying cereal again.
