Food Allergy

Soy allergy ? / Peas?

I'm hoping to keep this short.  DD has suspected Milk intolerance (we never tried soy).  And has been on Alimentum.  We've also just started seeing a GI because we thought her reflux was better and apparently it was not.

Anyway, GI said no dairy until one (at least) since DD fell off the weight charts (we're adding extra powder to her ready to feed and she's taking previcid now which seems to be helping).

So now that she's feeling better she's actually eating solids.  I gave her peas on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Thursday morning she had a pretty loose bowel movement, then two more at daycare (they didn't report anything unusual but it was probably like the one I changed in the AM).  Yesterday she had the same (once) and then last night she had diarrhea everywhere.

So since peas are new I'm assuming it's that.  I read that babies with a soy allergy might also have issues with peas and other beans.

Does this sound accurate to you other allergy mommas?  Of course we won't be eating anymore peas or beans and will tell the GI at her follow up, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Re: Soy allergy ? / Peas?

  • My DD is allergic to dairy and soy (and eggs), but can eat peas and beans. She loves beans. But they do give her super soft poop because of the fiber content. It's a good idea to mention your DD's issue to the GI, of course, but it may just be all the fiber. If you only gave her a small amount of peas or beans once or twice a week instead of every day, it may not cause a problem then.

  • I have heard the same thing and yes that is the case in our house, though her reaction is much less severe to peas compared to soy. DD had a slight rash on her cheeks for weeks and once I took peas out the rash went away, but soy will cause her immediate pain and gas. I agree with PP about the fiber content, it might just be loosening her up. If you don't see any type of rash or allergy ring or mucous in her stool I wouldn't worry too much.

  • It's not uncommon for people to be sensitive to all legumes, which would include soy, peas, beans, peanuts, lentils, and green beans.  DD and I react to all of these, but none of them are a true IgE allergy for us.

  • Thanks for your responses.  She's still have diarrhea and we stopped peas on Friday.  GI thinks it's a stomach virus or infection versus a pea allergy.  Anyway we're staying away from all beans.  I'm praying this diarrhea stops, she's so miserable and I'm tired of changing an exploded baby in the middle of the night (and day)...

So the plan is to call the GI back on Friday if she's not better.  I'm praying she's better by then.  She's so clingy, it's not helping that teeth one and two just broke through the other day - making all this even more confusing.
