Goals and objectives for work- help me!

So I was transferred to another department here at work. I've never had the chance to sit down with the manager since coming to this location. She is out of Dallas so I emailed her and told her I'd like to sit down and discuss my path/career here. (great move, right? lol)...well...today she told me that we'd set up a meeting for when she is in town next week but wants me to come up with performance goals and objectives for us to go over. So I know what she is talking about but is there a template for this or something so it doesn't come out in paragraph form (or is that how it should be?)...I don't want it to look like a story or something. I've never done something like this before and don't want it to be formatted incorrectly.

  • I think that objectives can be what will help you to meet an overall goal. Example:

Goal - increase sales by 20%

     - Objective #1 - Attend 3 networking events each month

     - Objective #2 - Ask all current customers for referrals

     - Objective #3 - Make 2 cold calls per week

Good luck! I always hate having to do stuff like that.

  • I completely agree with the previous recommendation. State an overall goal or several and then some bullets (objectives) on how you plan to achieve them. Good luck! I'm sure it's really hard to come up with something like that for yourself... this always comes from our management teams.

  • Thanks ladies...I've always been good at filling out the templates when it comes to my annual evals but just coming up with this from a blank slate is the hard part. I know essentially where I want to be but just need to fill in the in between and figure out the formatting.

  • We have to do these every year at work.  We use the SMART goal system.  (Specific,Measurable, Attainable,Realistic,Timely).  If you google SMART goals you will find lots of tips.  Basically what I do every year is make a table.  In the first column I put the goal and in the second column I put the steps I take to complete the goal.

What I found is don't make your goals to huge because you need to be able to meet them.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • Essentially...

I'm back in the medical coding dept here at work. I have experience in this dept but it has been 2-3 years since I have done this but am excited to be back. Things have changed since I have been doing this so I have a little to learn but welcome that idea. The dept is moving from a charge entry type of job to a coding type of job. I'll eventually become a certified medical coder thru the company (yay!). I have my degree in management. I'd like to become a key person in this dept and welcome the idea of being a team lead- that isn't a requirement but that seems to be the direction I'd have to go in. I don't desire to be over people but like the idea of having the knowledge where I can help others. Is this making sense? lol.... I feel like I am having a brain fart or maybe it's just nerves. I feel like the bolded part will be the focus of what I need to come up with but can't come up with the wording that I am looking for.

  • In the technical world, we'd call what you want to be the "Subject Matter Expert".  You want to be the go-to person that people can ask questions, get help & answers, make positive changes to your work environment to aid in productivity, etc.
