Fishy stink?

Our CD's have taken on a pretty gross stink lately, they smell like barnyard when dry and fish when wet, it only happens with the inserts, not the covers.  They don't have an ammonia smell and don't burn my eyes or nose when I change the girls so I don't think it's ammonia.  The smell has come about since moving into our new house almost 2 months ago, I haven't changed my wash routine or detergent but we did get a new top loader washer and dryer.

I wash every other day and do a cold rinse/hot wash with regular powdered Tide (2 1/2 Tbsp)/two cold rinses.  I used Oxi Clean on them last week but it didn't help at all.

The CD's have also been holding stains more than normal lately but I haven't sunned them for 2 months so that could be the stain problem.  The inserts are cotton (Grovia's) and microfiber, the cotton seems to be the stinkiest.  The cotton inserts also sometimes have a reddish/pinkish/orangish color around the edges after sitting in the pail for a day.

Please share your wisdom with me, I don't want my girls CD's to smell like fish when they pee.

Re: Fishy stink?

  • The reddish pink color makes me think mold. I would probably put more detergent and some bleach in (not much, but a 1/4 of a cup or less) with the inserts. Just to get it out and then rinse, rinse, rinse. Obviously, this would be a one time deal, not your regular routine. See if that helps clear out the stink.

  • I have fishy ocean smell from hard water, and depending on mineral content evaporation could leave an orangey residue. Try stripping with rlr and adding Calgon if you think it could be that. My test kit said I had moderately hard water but it is majorly annoying. If you have harder water your detergent may not work as well as in the old house.

  • Your diapers aren't getting clean enough. Are the rest of your clothes clean?  With my new washer I had to do a "deep clean" extra long cycle to get things clean. Whereas my old washer washed things just fine in a regular cycle.
