Just started Ferber

I just started Ferber last night to stop my DS from waking multiple times to eat. Last night, DS did great and only woke 15 mintues before the end of the time period! I am worried about going up another half hour though tonight and him crying for 30-45 minutes in hunger. Does it get progressively harder as the time periods get longer?

Re: Just started Ferber

  • I had more luck shortening feeds than increasing duration. You can adjust the plan if you want - do 2 nights per interval, or increase by 15 min per night.

  • I thought the 30 min / night increases sounded crazy, so I tried to make it something that I could handle if someone told me I was going to have to eat lunch later than usual. I increased by 15 min every 2-3 nights, like token suggested to you. The problem with that is it's very slow progress, and while I've been able to get down to 2 feeds from 3-4 a couple of times, when I get down to 2, something always happens that throws everything out the window - teething or an illness. Then when that craziness is over, she's back to 3-4 feeds, so I have to start over.

  • Thanks for the responses. Last night went pretty well, He only ate once last night! He has gone from eating 4x a night unto only once last night! I didn't ask him of it but he only woke briefly at feeding time and fell back to sleep before I even had a chance to pick him up and feed him. I hope he can keep this up!

  • LIke Token, first I shortened feeds from 7oz to 2 oz, and then one night he went to bed super late and that night I decided to Ferber. He cried over the course on an hour - not gut crying, but fussy monkey whine.  The next night he slept through.

There have only been a handful of nights since that I've had to apply a paci. You can do it!
