Working moms with kids in daycare - Are you sick?

I'm a first time mom (I have a 9 y/o SS but I met him when he was 4.5).  I work and my daughter is in daycare.  She's had one ear infection (knock on wood) but otherwise has been pretty healthy.

I, on the other hand, have been sick pretty much all winter which is VERY unusual for me.  Are those kiddo germs just buckling me?

I had to go back to the doc b/c I can't shake a bad case of bronchitis.

I've had bronchitis and sinus infections pretty much back to back.

Is this common?

  • I work but my DS does not go to Daycare. I am fighting my second flu in 4 weeks right now. I think it more from my job (I work with the homeless) than from my DS except for the fact that I am pretty sleep deprived from him not sleeping through the night. I think my lack of sleep is affecting my immune system.

  • It is pretty common.

I am thanking my lucky stars that I am teaching preschoolers and all I've had (ha) is the norovirus at christmas (thank you relatives) and then i had a cold a couple weeks ago where i lost my voice.

Luckily, the child has only had sniffles..

     thank you magic breast milk

  • My kids are at an in-home daycare (for our first time ever) and this is the first season we haven't had a major illness amongst the kids.  Me? I rarely get sick, but I am kind of a health nut and take good care of myself.  Get rest, drink LOTS of water, eat right, exercise and take a multi-vitamin. I haven't been super duper sick in a LONG time (but I was often the winter after my son was born)  Take care of yourself! It's important!

This. I've known for many years that when I don't get enough sleep, I get sick. Lack of sleep affects everyone's immune system to some extent, but for some it's more of a factor than for others. For me it's huge. Every time DH or DD have gotten sick this winter (and DD isn't even in daycare), I have, too, and it has hit me about 100x worse than them. Colds, stomach flu, you name it - they have it and are over it in a day or two, I get it and am miserable for a week. With DD's current cold, I'm up 10+ times / night because she can't sleep well. I know when I get it (which I certainly will), I'm going to feel like I'm dying.

  • I hardly ever got sick before I had children.  Now I am sick all the time.  My kids are not in daycare but my daughter goes to preschool and I take them to the child watch at the YMCA and it is like full on germ assault.  Young children are disease magnets.

  • Yes. I do think my lack of sleep affects my immune system as well. Every time one baby gets sick, the other gets sick and I get sick as well. My magic breast milk isn't as magical as I'd like.

  • God, YES! A million times, YES! I feel like I have been battling a slight cold since September. I haven't been knocked out sick yet, but more of a constant annoyance. DH has been bowled over twice by sicknesses and my mom, who watches our LO twice a week, has been plagued as well. Lo has had a runny nose more than she hasn't since she started daycare.

  • Elena has had bronchitis/pnemonia, ear infections, sinus infection, bronchitis again (currently) and has been congested pretty much the time inbetween.  She has been in daycare from 3 months, and got sick the first week.

I have been catching colds from her pretty regularly, nothing serious.  Aside from her stuff, I caught a stomach bug and strep throat, and luckily didn't pass it to anyone else.

I'm expecting to be sick for the next 18 years or so.  Sigh.
