Non-ultra pasteurized organic whole milk

Today we're starting whole milk! After reading a bunch of information, I've decided that I'd like to get milk that isn't ultra-pasteurized for the kiddo. Where do you get your non-ultra pasteurized organic whole milk? (Boy that's a mouthful.)

Re: Non-ultra pasteurized organic whole milk

  • Both Natural Grocers and WF have Texas Daily Harvest which is a low temp pasturaized milk from grass fed cows.  You can read more about the farm here: https://texasdailyharvest.com/home.php

that's interesting, I just assumed it was. I couldn't find any info online but I highly doubt its from grass-fed cows.  And I thought this link was interesting: https://www.cornucopia.org/dairysurvey/FarmID_167.html

(not that its necessarily true for the central market brand)

jml5q does it say anywhere on the label where the milk is from?

  • i have no idea about the grass fed thing. i'll have to look on the label at home (i'm at work). if i remember, i'll update later. :)

I have some Central Market brand milk in my fridge (2%) and it says it's ultra-pasteurized on the front. :/ I picked up the Texas Daily Harvest milk at Natural Grocers. I tried some and it was delicious.

Coming from Hawaii, where a gallon of regular milk can be $8, I still can't get over paying $3.50 for a half gallon of organic milk. Milk is so cheap here that I don't mind paying extra for organic / grass-fed / whatever.

  • The Texas Daily Harvest milk is super yummy. It is also non-homogenized, so you have to shake it up first before using the disperse the cream.

don't get the one in the half gallon carton, it has to be the gallon jug in the plastic container. if it's in the cardboard carton, it's ultra-pasteurized. but the gallons are not. so it's got an expiration date 2 weeks out at most. it's $5.99/gallon.

  • M&R - i looked on the label and didn't see anything saying where the milk was from. it just says distributed by HEB Central Market, Austin, TX. probrably not very helpful. :)

  • If its not labeled grass fed the cows are probably not fed what cows were meant to eat, grass. This causes a variety of issues in the health of the cow. Many of them are likely kept indoors and never see daylight. That's very unhealthy for the animal and the milk it produces. It also reduces the nutrients as the animal gets little exercise or sunlight (less vitamin D).

It never would have occurred to me that the half gallon and the gallon would be different! We aren't big milk drinkers here so we never buy bigger than a half gallon. Thanks for the info.
