s/o The Stubborn Potty Trainer

DD is so stubborn and we originally PTed in September. It was a total battle of wills but after 5 days of constant potty training we made significant progress. However, she will only use the potty at home or at daycare. For a few months, she would only wear pull-ups because she did not like any of the underwear. I got her to start wearing underwear a few weeks ago but I am having zero luck on the public bathrooms. Anytime we are out somewhere, we have to find the restrooms. Usually, we will walk in and she will say, 'no, I don't like it here.' I have tried bribes, treats, etc... Anyone have anything that can help me?? I am so tired of carrying around the travel potty.

  • You know your daughter best, but if you just stopped bringing the travel potty, would she wet her pants, hold it or use the public restroom?  I would think if you eliminate her preferred option, she will be more amendable.  Another thought, what is your attitude towards public restrooms?  Are you the don't touch anything while you're in here because it's all dirty or are you more laid back.  If you're in the former category, your DD probably picked up on it and is just echoing your sentiments.

  • Woops, I should have added (got interrupted by work) that I think it's not that unusual.  DD will only use some public potties. I would say about 1/3 of the time she says she has to go, dislikes the bathroom, and then just holds it till we get to another store, or go home.

I think I have been totally laid back about the public restrooms. I have even tried to let her sit on my lap (become the human toilet ring) but she wants no part of it. When we went out on Saturday, I 'forgot' the travel potty and she just decided to hold it. She has amazing bladder control :-)

This made me laugh and then reminded me that I always ask DD if she wants to potty first or if I should.  That seems to make her more likely to use the restroom.  At our house, the girls pee pee together daily.  DD loves to use her little potty while I go on the big one.  One day privacy will return...

  • I'm loling @ "human potty ring". We have the opposite problem with C. Public restrooms are So! Much! Fun! Must touch EVERYTHING! I shudder to think about all the times I have had to stop him from diving in to the little trash can on the wall (barf!).
