make your own pizza party

DS is going to be 4 next month and he wants a train party but he also wants to make pizza.      So we're serving pizza.

I'm going to make a couple batches of pizza dough and have them prerolled out into kid sized pizzas.    I'll give each kid a pizza, a small bowl of sauce with a spoon in it and a small bowl of shredded cheese.   Then I'll have other toppings(sausage, pepperoni, etc) in bowls on the table.   The kids can tell the adults what ones they want and then one of the adults will put a spoonful of it on their plate.    I'll have cookie sheets covered in tin foil so I can write each kid's name in sharpie next to each pizza.

I figure we'll let the kids just play for 30 minutes or so, assemble the pizzas, and then play a game or 2 (or just let the kids free play dependinging on their moods) while the pizzas are coooking.   Eat pizza, play some more, have cake(with a train on it), and then everyone goes home.

Opinions?   Do you think I'm nuts?   There will be 9 kids(plus DS) ranging from ages 3-6.   All the parents will be there too(some with just mom and other with both parents)   Also my dad and DH's parents will there to help out.

  • We did that last year for my son's 5th birthday ; ) it went over really well! We had a monster truck theme so they got to decorate monster trucks while the pizza was cooking and then had races after cake. I am sure they will have a blast.

  • Sounds like fun!  I'm sure it will be a little crazy but what kid birthday party isn't?!?!  You sound very organized so I'm sure things will go just fine!

  • I think it sounds great.  One suggestion since I am assuming you won't be able to cook all the pizzas at the same time, I would stagger bringing a few kids over to the table at a time to decorate their pizza and then start cooking them as they finish.  The pizzas won't be done at the same time but only having a few kids at the table at once might keep it a little less crazy.  I think it sounds great.  My niece did this one year although the kids were older but it was a blast.  Or maybe have the kids decorate their pizza right away when they get their and then start cooking shortly before you are ready to eat.

That was one of the things I have to still figure out.   My oven is pretty big and has 3 racks.   I just need to see how many pizzas I can fit on each cookie tray so I know if I need to cook 1 or 2 batches of pizzas.
