Parenting after a Loss

When did your baby start to like certain toys?

Winter will be mildly interested in different toys at different times, but she has no clear preference or any special "lovey." She gets far more excited about and fascinated with people, books, random objects like glasses of water, lights, ceiling fans, etc. Some of our baby friends her age already have a favorite toy that they snuggle and sleep with, just curious what your experiences have been. I like that she isn't overly attached so I don't have to always remember a specific toy but I'd love for something besides my boob to be able to comfort her.

Re: When did your baby start to like certain toys?

  • SHe still hasn't latched onto a specific toy or lovely.

Maybe my iPhone is her fav toy? She's willing to launch herself off the bed to go after a fallen iPhone (as I learned this weekend).

  • Honestly, I think this is another case of your friends exaggerating :) my DD Had no preference clearly for anything that little. I dont think babies really form attachments to lovies that young either. That happened for us after 1 year. She liked her toys at winter's age but didn't love anyone thing

  • I think attachment starts a little later, say around 9months-18months.  Lo is obsessed with grabbing fingers and walking around the house.  Not with any toy, really (except Daddy).

  • Sawyer has always had certain toys he prefered over others. He had a bouncy seat with toys and he always stared down the bee. When I packed up the bouncy I took the bee off and he still plays with it.

We introduced a lovey (a small taggie blanket) at 6 months when we started sleep training. It wasn't until the past few weeks that he's gotten super attached to it. Now he loves to carry it everywhere.

Pretty much this. She had a preference for certain toys that were more interesting than others, but nothing she HAD to have.

It's very clear now that she LOVES her Angel Dear lovies, A&A muslin blankets, and socks. If she gets her hands on any of the above she will carry them everywhere. But that didn't happen until maybe 10-11 months or so.

  • Nothing.  Just in the past couple of weeks he's gotten a blanket to sleep with, and I think he's going to be a blanket kid.  He lays on his belly and makes grabbing motions with his hannds to receive it on his back.  LOL.

He didn't have ANY interest in ANY toys until about 6 months and certainly not to be clingy to any one in particular.

  • My DD is just now starting to become obsessed with balls, but other than that she has never been attached to a toy or anything.

  • Nate does have a soft leopard toy/ blankie that he started to prefer maybe around 3.5 mos. It's partly because we encouraged it as his special toy and i think partly because it's soft.  He only really started getting interested in other toys - rattle, etc - maybe a few weeks ago.

  • Nolan will prefer certain toys over others when I offer them to him but not really one in particular.  Everytime he takes a nap though I give him this really soft blue bunny that has a paci attached to it and he really loves it it's so sweet but again that could be because it's the only thing that I offer to him at every nap.  He rarely takes the paci but he puts his arm around the bunny and falls asleep in his RnP that way it's funny.

  • We just introduced a lovie to DD a couple of days ago and she seems pretty taken with it. We gave it to her Sunday morning and she hasn't let go of it since (except for once I take it away after she is out cold because she likes to put it on her face.) And when we do take it away she smiles when she we give it back and holds it by her face and "talks" to it. We gave it to her because she was starting to really like holding onto her burp clothes and I figured it was better than something covered in spit-up. Obviously I know she's not super attached to it she doesn't cry when we take it away and anything similar would do but sure does seem to love her monkey.

  • DD doesn't have any favorites. She'll like whatever she can grab and shove in her mouth. That's about it.

This. Ability to fit in mouth is the only criteria G has these days.

This is pretty much D's criteria as well.  Tops on his list lately are Sophie and a plastic chain.  No lovies for him yet.

  • I remember that phase.  I thought DS would be into toys from very early.  So wrong.  He was probably around 6 months before he was really interested in anything to keep his attention, but even now he won't sit and play with toys for much longer than 2-3 minutes withou wanting someone to be directly interacting with him.
