August 2012 Moms

vomiting from congestion and drainage

today is the 2nd day in a row and the third total that i've lost it first thing in the morning because of so much mucus in my stomach. and this is coming from a person who had virtually no m/s. i'm going to call my doctor and see what they recommend as a decongestant. of course i had to pick an unseasonable warm winter to get pregnant.

  • Hey,

I suffered from this as a kid and it has come back as a soon to be momma. Actually, what has given me substantial relief is NOT decongestants, but rather taking allergy medicine at night instead of during the day. My dr. also recommended a dose of tylenol PM or benedryl before bed to help dry up the drainage and help you sleep better too.

I was surprised at how much of a difference it made. Maybe ask your OB if it is ok to give that a try? Good luck

thanks! i have actually tried benedryl amd it definately helped with the sleeping. it probably has kept me from throwing up, but everytime i cleared my throat or even sniffled I gagged. I just didn't want to constantly be on something. everyone around me is sick with something right now so I guess for at least a few more weeks it can't be avoided. <sigh>

  • This is me, every single morning, for the past 4 weeks. Every morning, I wake up with a bunch of stuff in my throat, and when I cough, up it (and sometimes much more) comes.

I've always had issues with my nose running a lot though, so at least this symptom I can handle because it tends to be mostly in the morning. It's the heart burn and the burping that I hate.

Feel better! I have found that sleeping propped up more has helped me quite a bit.

  • I have had this for probably the last 4 weeks! Its terrible I have so much drainage when I wake up that I am always gagging and getting sick. I am hoping it subsides soon but I am going to ask my doctor about it at my next appt.

  • thanks everyone,

i called my dr office and was told zirtec d or claretin d are ok to take. the nurse practictioner said especially in my area the wild temperature swings are worst on pregnant women. hopefully i'll be feeling better soon :)

  • I take the plain zyrtec after dinner with my prenatal. I am no doctor, but I think the Zyrtec D has 120 mg of sudafed, which seems like a lot to me. Shrug. Hope it helps either way.

My OB told me that in a perfect world, we would all have drug free pregnancies, but it was completely unrealistic and zyrtec was perfectly safe and I was not doing anyone any favors not taking it.
