Cloth Diapering

Thoughts on diaper cream?

ok, so every mom (ok, not every mom, but most...) I know uses diaper cream during every single diaper change as a preventative measure.  My thought is that of if you use it all of the time, your child will build immunity to it.  I am not sure if I am way off base or not.

What are your thoughts on this?  Do you use diaper cream at every change, or just when you see a rash appearing?

Thanks!

  • We use the grovia magic stick every night before bed since she is in her ON diaper 12+ hours as a preventative. Then we occasionally use it through out the day when her excema is an issue or if there is any redness. One of the best things about cloth, is that LOs have less irritation and rashes. You shouldn't need something every time. We've never needed to use any actual rash cream.

  • I use Grandma El's every night as a preventative and CJ's BUTTer during the day if I notice a small amount of redness starting (nearly never)

  • You can't build an immunity to diaper cream. All it does is make a barrier so dampness doesn't penetrate the skin and cause a diaper rash.

  • You can't get immune to it (it's not an antibiotic!), but you don't need to use it all the time. We only use something if DS looks red. He's never had a bad rash.

We used coconut oil every time for the first few weeks... and then we got lazy and nothing happened.

  • In the close to 4 months we've been CDing, we've never used rash cream and we've never had a problem with rashes either.

  • Like one PP, we used to use diaper cream at ever change but then we got lazy. So far, we haven't had any problems since we figured out that our detergent was causing a rash. I do check every change to make sure that she isn't getting red.
