For those that pump

I know there have been posts before about how much your little one eats, but if you can humor me and answer the question again.  If you are giving your little one pumped bottles, either with your breastfeeding or exclusively pumping, how much does he or she eat?

My little one is a month old today.  We are breastfeeding extremely well but I try and give her a pumped bottle every couple of days.  We do this so that she can get used to having a bottle occasionally, if we go out or if I run late at work.  Tonight she had three ounces and it looked like she could have ate more.  She didn't ask for more but I get the feeling she would have ate it if we gave it to her.  Three ounces seems like a lot of breast milk so was curious what others were eating.  Thank-you.

  • My little ham can eats a 4 oz pumped bottle when he is given one! Tonight he was given a 3.5 oz and still got the breast after for a little more to top off! He isn't spitting it up either. Makes me think he is not getting enough from me because I don't make that much yet. However I have been having to nurse from both breasts lately.

  • We started giving our little one a bottle once a day at 4 weeks and she has taken 4 oz every time. That seems to keep her happy. :)

  • My LO is 8 weeks (adjusted to 4 weeks because she was a preemie) and she started taking 4 oz last week.

  • We just increased DS to 3.5 ounces per feeding. He must be going through a growth spurt bc he pretty much wiped out my stash yesterday!

  • My DD is almost 5 weeks, but is a peanut (less than 7lbs). She will eat 3-3.5oz every 3 hours and be completely satisfied.

My ped said the stomach capacity in ounces is their weight in pounds divided by 2. (For example: my DD is almost 7lbs, so her stomach capacity is 3.5oz)

  • LO is three weeks and she does 3.5 and first bottle in the morning is closer to 4. Basically just watch to see if they are spitting it up, or seem bloated and uncomfortable, if so, they probably ate too much.

  • I read somewhere that you take their weight in kilos and multiply by 6 to get the total # of ounces they should get per day - then divide that by the number of feedings to determine how much to give at once. My LO weighs about 9 1/2 lbs and nurses a lot, so a typical bottle for him is 2.75 - 3 oz.

  • DS is almost 9 pounds I think, and he is taking about 3.75 oz about every 3 hours, longer stretches in between in the evenings.

This is from The Nursing Mother's Companion, and it seems pretty accurate!

  • I am jealous of all the babies that are taking 3-4 ounces at a time. Our LO has reflux and will eat every hour or so and takes 2 ounces.  Once in a while he will take 3 but then spits up.
