When did your LO start LIKING cow's milk?

I've put off weaning because my daughter drinks hardly any cow's milk. I want her to be getting enough liquids, so I don't feel comfortable dropping any more nursing sessions right now (she's down to about 3 or 4 daily). She does drink some water and juice, but I try to be cautious with those.

When did your LO start liking it enough to where it could replace breastmilk or formula? Does it really need to replace it, or do they get enough nutrition from other food sources now? I would just feel weird if my baby was only nursing a couple times and not drinking any milk during the day. I'm probably over thinking this. TIA.

  • Have you tried mixing Cm in with Bm and wean that way? Ds always seemed to like Cm, so we didn't have a problem. But I also noticed he liked his milk room temp when he was younger too. Maybe warming up the Cm would help??

  • My older son still prefers yogurt to milk. He nursed past two, but was eating yogurt regularly while he was nursing.

You don't need to worry if she's still nursing, and you can always substitue milk with food, or other forms of dairy. hth

  • There is no need to limit water, it's really the best thing for LOs to drink, if you are worried about her staying hydrated. If you really want to transition to cm then I would suggest trying to warm it if you haven't, and also maybe try 2%? Some kids just don't like whole.

  • we do offer LO water at meals, too. IMO it's preferable to juice. Cow's milk is not the be-all end-all either for replacing formula: goat's milk has a protein that is easier to digest. Almond milk is an option, too. Soy also if no allergy..Our doctor advised us that "cow's milk is for cows, not humans" but we still give it to her anyway, and unsweetened almond milk as well. She likes whatever kind of milk we give her, it seems. I'm the picky one. ;)

  • My son JUST started drinking cows milk this week.  After trying it a couple of times at 12 and 13 months, we decided to wait a couple months and try again.    I actually thought he had a milk allergy as he seemed to have tummy issues after drinking it.  Month 15 and wha-lah!  Drinking milk!  These kiddos are strange little buggers at times.  ;)

Do not try 2% though until you run it by your doctor first.  Babies really need the extra fats in whole milk, unless your doctor is concerned with how much weight your LO gains on it.  My LO seems to love WCM, but we are still putting about an oz of formula in it for another day or two until I'm out of my stash.  We also slightly warm it up to take the chill off.

  • Thanks for the responses. So today I gave it to her warm in a bottle instead of a nursing session and she drank the whole thing. I couldn't believe it. So now the question is, do I really want to start using bottles now? Is it worth it if I can wean easier and she'll be getting the nutrition she needs? What do you guys think?

  • I don't remember now, but sometime around 18-20 months. We just kept offering it. One day she decided she wanted it- while still at the grocery store- and I had to hunt down a cup and straw right.that.second.

    We still nurse, though.
