Those who have gone dairy free

At my LO's 1 month check up her pediatrician recommended that I take dairy out of my diet to see if it helped with her being fussy.  A few weeks later she was diagnosed with acid reflux.  She has been taking Zantac for 3-4 weeks now and is much better.  I want to start eating some dairy again, but want to know what signs I should be looking for if she does have issues with dairy.  How did you know that your LO had problems with dairy?  TIA.

  • I'm in the same boat. My son's pediatrician told me to add it back in very slowly and keep an eye out on it. I haven't noticed a huge difference since I cut it out but I'm going to give it another week and then probably try cheese or yogurt then go from there. I'm assuming as pp said that you should keep an eye on the poops and probably fussiness?? Sorry that wasn't very helpful but I'm interested to see what else people have to say!

  • I ate some pizza on Friday night and then leftover pizza on Saturday for lunch.  She seemed to be ok.  Last night I had cheese on a fajita and she was fussy at night.  Today I haven't had any dairy and she was fussy again tonight.  I have no clue what to make of all of this.  I feel like it might be the dairy, but I have no clue how to know for sure.  If only they could talk...

  • I just found out on Friday that DS and I have to cut dairy and soy.  Milk and soy are in everything!!! Now it's just milk and soy protiens that he cant digest very well, but still I have to check every label.  I thought It was an allergy because of the gas, oh lord the non stop ransid gas!  He was pretty unhappy about it also, but being a first time mom I didnt realize him fussing was actually colic.  Since changing our diets he's much happier, but I'm not sure how to feed myself anymore. Any fast and easy meal suggestions???
  • My girlfriend's son has a milk allergy.  It was horrible.  He screamed for 12 hours every day, and his rash on his bottom was so bad that it was bleeding.

If he has a milk allergy, you'll probably know.  I'm not sure about the lactose intolerance.  Good luck!!

  • FWIW, my lactation consultant said if it an allergy, they will have a rash. Gassiness is probably just their little systems figuring it out. She does not recommend cutting from my diet unless I'm seeing something rashes or something severe like blood.

This is what I understand as well.

PP- for meals I would check out the Food Allergy board, they have some good resources there.

  • we've been dairy free for 3.5 weeks.

our telltale dairy intolerance signs were mucusy poop, excessive mucus in the nose and when he spit up, a red ring around his anus, and we had one green poop. our fussiness level has decreased a little, but he's still ridiculously gassy.
