Falling asleep while eating...

So DS is 10 days old today, which I've read is a growth spurt time. I'm concerned bc he has been falling asleep at every feeding today like 2 minutes into it. Is it just because of the growth spurt, or could he not be getting enough milk? He has had several wet diapers today, so I don't know if it's that.

Re: Falling asleep while eating...

  • I think it's normal. My LO falls asleep a lot while eating, especially after 10 minutes into it. Try things to keep him awake- I try taking his clothes off except the diaper, tickling his cheek, under his chin, and the bottom of his feet. If those don't work, I change his diaper. If that doesn't work, I give up until the next feeding :)

  • With DS #1, I kept a cool washcloth with me during feedings to rub on his cheeks. It helped keep him a little more awake until he was able to stay up on his own. Don't worry-- this too will pass :)

  • My little guy sometimes does this too.  Sometimes he will stay awake, but about 10-15 minutes thats it.  This stinks because it was causing some serious engorgement! Anywho, my LC in the hospital suggested that we rub his hands and I have also read that taking a deep breath may help wake him and stimulate sucking.  Both of these work to an extent, but I think they just need their sleep and as PP said I eventually just give up until the next feeding.
