Cloth Diapering

Meconium and flushable liners?

I had planned to use disposables during the meconium stage, but of course, now that I've ordered my stash I want to use them right away! What do you think of using flushable liners for the first few days to avoid meconium stains? I've read that it doesn't always stain, but I'm nervous after spending a bunch of money on cloth. WDYT?

Re: Meconium and flushable liners?

  • It really does wash out. No stains. Or if it did, they sunned out completely.

My flushable liners would be enormous on a newborn.

  • My home birth mom friends that used cloth from the moment their children were born have said that meconium is not an issue. Most people that say it is are those that haven't tried it. Also I've been told BF poo stains worse.

  • FWIW, by the time we came home from the hospital (LO was about 48 hours old) there was no more meconium. He passed it all during those first two days. Also, just wanted to add that baby poop in general stains. Nearly all of our diapers have poo stains, but I try not to let it bother me. They're diapers, after all.

  • OK, that's reassuring. I'll give it a try with some of my used PFs and see how it goes before I throw on one of the more expensive ones. Thanks!

  • Meconium washed right out of our prefolds.  The stains were a dull brown, but they're disappearing the more we use and wash them.  Doesn't affect their absorbancy in the least.

  • Your LO should be done with meconium poo by the time you get home.
