Check Written Out To Baby?

I received as a gift today a check, but it is written out to my LO. Has anyone ever had this before?

I'm going to call my bank tomorrow, but I have a feeling that I won't be able to cash it since it is in her name and she is not yet existing in any system. She is due in less than 2 months, so technically the check will still be good when she is here (most banks have checks that expire in 90 days) but just curious what you did or would do in this situation. TIA.

Re: Check Written Out To Baby?

  • DH said he thinks you could deposit it now.  Just sign as your LO.  Since it's a deposit and not a withdrawal, they probably won't care.

  • We got checks made out to DS when he was born.  We opened a savings account for him at our bank and deposited them.

  • You sign your LO name and then your name underneath.  I have to do this all the time b/c people always write checks out to my nickname instead of my legal name.  Its no biggie.

  • I think they'll cash it. I was a bank teller in college (of course this was over 10 years ago) and people brought in checks made out to their kids all the time for us to cash and the kids had no bank account. Unless it's a huge sum of money it shouldn't be a problem.

  • I worked at a bank all through college. When we had a check for a minor we would have the parent sign and write Guardian of Minor underneath.

  • Thanks! I just wasn't sure how this would work and it threw me off a little lol. Will see if my bank teller cooperates tomorrow (I use a bank that is great but the tellers sure leave so much to be desired! The problems I have had with them could fill a book...)

  • I work at a bank.  As PP said just sign LO's name with your name underneath it and add guardian or mother behind your name.  As far as opening an account for LO at least with where I work you would need to wait until you have their Social Security number to open a minor savings for them.

  • Deposit them at the ATM. If you have Bank of America, they might not accept it at the counter. That was our bank when we got married - we'd had a joint account for years prior. I didn't change my name, and BoA wouldn't accept any checks made out to Mr. & Mrs. HisLastName. I walked to a different BofA ATM and deposited them there with no problem.
