newborn hearing test?

Question for you all-knowing ladies... Is the newborn hearing test they give in the hospital optional? I know it is important to have the baby's hearing tested but I'm just wondering if you are allowed to test outside of the hospital. I ask because we recently received our bill for the test and I'm curious if there is a less-expensive way to test. It seems a pretty pricey routine thing that is done, yet I wasn't expecting to pay and assume others may be surprised by it as well..

Thanks!

  • I was told it was mandatory and I was super p!ssed when got the high bill in the mail a month later.

  • My insurance must have paid 100% last time because I know I didn't get this bill before. The hospital and OB were so big this time on wanting payments upfront and making sure you knew what you were expected to pay...I'm surprised they didn't let me know about this too. I guess the ped i atr ix company is the one that would need to do the notice.

  • I was super pissed about the bill too. With our insurance, ALL inpatient care is supposed to be covered at 100% and they said the hearing test wasn't covered because it was optional. Uh, no it wasn't. But I've no clue what the other options are.

  • I'm surprised they told you it was mandatory. It was made very clear to me that ours was optional, and if insurance didn't cover it, we'd be billed. Thankfully, our insurance did cover it, though.

Really? Wow, I wish we would have asked about it when they came in to do the test. They just really didn't say anything except tell us why they were coming in and what they were going to do.

  • They told us it was optional but then treated us like we were the worst parents on the planet for refusing it.  We stood our ground, though, as this was baby #2 and I knew better.  I think our pedi did something similar (paid for by insurance or included in the newborn check-ups) that satisfied her (and us) that everything was fine.
  • I had no idea insurance might not pay for it! I guess I'll add that to the list of questions I need to ask them next week. How expensive is it if it's not covered?
