VBAC

VBAC--fail...

Since I lurked this post quite a bit this pregnancy, I thought I'd share my story with you all.  I knew I wanted to try for a vaginal birth this time as I wanted to be able to recover faster so I could care for my 3 year old sooner, and I was hoping I would be able to have earlier milk production for breastfeeding.  The first section was due to failure to fully dialate (but I never got pitocin or an epi) I got to 8.5 cm, and just stopped progressing and my son's heart rate dropped with each contraction, so they did the section.

SO--I was a good candidate for a VBAC, I had to choose a different hospital (which was fine with me) as the previous one did not allow VBACs.  I started having contractions at 3:30pm on Friday the 10th, they were manageable and inconsistent until around 7:00pm when we decided to drive the hour to the hospital.  I got there and was 5 cm dialated so they got me a room.  Around 7 cm, I decided to try the epi as I knew that hadn't slowed my progress in the previous delivery.  I was able to relax for awhile and then around midnight I was fully dialated!  I pushed for over 3 hours and that's when the dr called it as I had made no progress whatsoever during that whole time.  Despite the epi I was able to try squatting, using the bar, using sheets tied to the bar to pull, the ball,as well as side to side and pushing on my back.  My little girl was born 2/11/12 via c-section at 4;01 am.  She was totally wedged into my pelvis and has bruising on her head and forehead as well as a cut on her head.  Poor kid--slammed repeatedly into my pelvis!  Fortunately breastfeeding has been going great, and I'm hearing that is the norm with the second child, so I'm relieved about that development.

I have to say I'm glad I tried, but the other thought on my mind is that I really put my body and my baby's body through a lot of crap that we're having to recover through just because I wanted to do it the "natural way".  Ugh.

Anyway--good luck to all of you!

Re: VBAC--fail...

  • My c/s was for the same reason--induced, got to 9cm, stayed there for 6 hours, then after getting an epi baby's heart rate started dropping with contractions.

Sorry you weren't able to get your VBAC!  Good for trying for so long though.  Hope your recovery is quick and uneventful.  :-)

  • My C/S with DS was for the exact same reason as your second - pushed for 3 hours and kiddo was stuck behind my pelvis. His head was so bruised when he was born :( It sounds like you did an amazing job, sorry it didn't end the way you wanted but sometimes it just can't happen despite your best efforts and that's not something you can know until baby is out usually. Congrats on your new baby!
  • Thank you for posting your story. Congrats on your LO. We aren't expecting #2 yet and I'm on the fence about VBAC or RCS for the reason you mentioned at the end. Do I really want to put LO thorugh all the pushing and such to just end upi with another c-section. I appreciate your honesty.
