GBS question

So I found out at my last appt that I tested positive for GBS and completely forgot to ask this question...do I need to go to L&D as soon as I suspect labor or can I wait a little bit?  Like some other posts on the board, I really want to try and get through as much as possible as home (we are only 8 min from the hospital) before going in, but now IDK with having to get the IV.  I have an appt tomorrow and I will ask then, but I just thought I'd see what you ladies were told just in case LO decides to come tonight (although I doubt it) TIA!

Re: GBS question

  • I am also positive.  My doctor said I need to come when contractions are 5-1-1 OR my water breaks.  She said the water breaking in the bigger deal with GBS.

This, exactly. I was GBS+ with our first and this is exactly what my OB told me as well. Best of luck to you!

  • Same here...but when I knew I was in labor, I called my doctor's office to give them a heads up, even though I wasn't 5-1-1 yet, and my water hadn't broken. They said if possible they like to hook me up to the antibiotics before my water breaks, so I ended up going in probably a little earlier than I would have. They pumped me with a bag of antibiotics in my IV before breaking my water.

  • I found out I was positive at my appointment today. I specifically asked my OB and he said definitely when my water breaks. He also said if I'm 5-1-1. My OB is not a big fan of labor at home for any tIme at all. He did say that it would not be the end of the world if I delivered as soon as I got to the hospital and was unable to get meds. He said they would just keep the baby in the nursery for observation longer.

Im certainly not trying to imply that being positive couldn't have serious effects on your LO if you're not treated. My OB just made me feel a little less apprehensive about all of it.
