when to go to the hospital

I hate the am I in labor posts.....but yet here I am with a similiar post

my doctor said consistant contractions following 5-1-1, five minutes apart, lasting 1 minute for one hour

well I have been having contractions for days. Last night I was woken up by them at 1:00 am, I layed in bed until 130 then decided to time them because I wasnt sleeping.

they were between 3-7 minutes apart, lasting from 45sec to 1minute 15 seconds for an hour and a half. I started getting ready to go the the hospital, ate something, took a shower ect. they continued for what was 3 hours since I started timing. I was sure it was it, but they werent increasing in pain. Then they started to fade and I fell back asleep. I am now going with the 5-1-1 and increasing intensity, waiting until I cant take it anymore, to go.

so when did you/will you go to the hospital?

Re: when to go to the hospital

  • I'm a FTM so take this as you will, but my plan is to hold out at home as long as I can because I think labouring at home is goign to be more comfortable than donig it in the tiny L&D rooms of the hospital.

As long as you don't have any of the urgent signs (bleeding, water breaking) then there really isn't any need to go till you're positive you're at 5 mins apart lasting 1 minute for at least 1 hour. ...unless of course you live far from the hospital as well!

This is me too. I want to labour at home as long as possible and will be waiting until I cannot talk or walk through my contractions before going to the hospital. I will be calling my midwife at 5-1-1 so she knows and can come over to check me out before we head to the hospital closer to 3 or 4-1-1.  I would love to roll up to the hospital and be at 7 or 8 so I can spend the least amount of time there.

  • It depends.  I have had contractions 2-4 minutes apart for the last week.  They are causing me to dilate and efface slowly but I am not entering into active labor yet.  Basically I was told to wait until like the pp stated that I cannot walk through the contractions and they intensify in pain.  I only live 3 minutes from the hospital so I has this as an option.  It all depends on what your OB wants you to do.
  • I am a FTM, so I haven't done this before.  My hospital class told us 4-1-1 for first time moms.  But I had contractions 4 min apart and all for several hours the other night.  The only problem was they weren't too painful to walk/talk through.  They were painful, but not that painful.  So my new plan is to stay here until I can't handle the pain anymore.

I hope it's soon, because this is really frustrating!  My time off from work and my time with my sister is slowly clicking away, with no baby!!!!

  •    With our first, I started having noticable contractions at 6 a.m. when my husband left for work. Fell back asleep until 8 a.m., when they started waking me up. I was in denial and a bit stubborn about being in labor. My sister came over around 10 a.m. and convinced me I was in labor. By then, they were every six minutes.

We called my mom and husband around noon to let them know what was going on. By then, they were every 5 minutes. Once my husband got home from work at 2:30, they were about every 4 and a half. I was stubborn and insisted on taking a shower. Once I was ready to head to the hospital, a half hour away, they were 2 minutes apart. The ride was less than uncomfortable to say the least. LOL!

When they checked me, I was 100% effaced and dialated to a 3.5. They decided to keep me because the contractions were putting me into active labor. I went from a 3.5 to 5 in about an hour, they broke my water, then went from a 5 to a 10 in about an hour and a half.

Anyways, my advice is to stay "comfortable" at home until you can't stand the pain. Laboring at home for as long as I could was definitely the best choice for me. I was able to walk around, squat, pretty much do what I wanted without the restrictions of the fetal monitor and IV. Bottom line is though, go when you feel like you need to. Your Mamma instincts know what's for the best! :) Best of luck to you!

  • I woke up at 12:30am with one contraction but was able to fall back asleep.  Woke up at 1:15am with more contractions.  By 2:30, they were 5 minutes apart and about a minute long.  I called the answering service and had the on-call call me back.  She said to wait another hour and then come in - which for us meant leave the house since my hospital was an hour away.  By the time we got there (around 4am), contractions were 3 minutes apart and at least a minute long.  I was admitted at 5am at 5 cm with contractions 1 minute apart and lasting over a minute.
