s/o - Dandruff

Ugh.  I have dandruff.  It pretty much disappeared while I was pregnant and I thought it was because I bought some pricy shampoo that actually worked.  But now the shampoo is still pricy but the dandruff is back, so apparently it was just a pregnancy quirk.

I feel like my dandruff is worse than before, but it could just be that my memory is foggy.  Most dandruff shampoos either don't work at all or leave my hair so dry it's like straw.  Anyone have something that works for them?

  • YES! I have been using Aveda Scalp Remedy for years. It has the same active ingredient as all the shampoos, but you spray it on your hair when it's dry and leave it in, so it has a lot more time to work. It really helps me. I will use it daily for a week or so to get it under control and then sometimes I don't use it for a month or two. Dandruff blows!! Hope this helps.

  • Selsun Blue has a new one that has exfoliant that my husband uses. It works really well. I heard that if you use cold water instead of hot water it will help but idk if that is true or not.

  • I have this too, but I think it's actually dry skin.  When I went off birth control in 2007 I started getting itchy scalp and dry patches on my face.  When I was pregnant my scalp and skin were fine.  A few months after DS was born all of the dry skin came back.  Now it's not so bad on my face, but my scalp is quite dry.

  • I never thought about it just being dry scalp.  Hmm, maybe I'll try a moisturizing shampoo first.  And then the Aveda spray in stuff if that doesn't work.

As for a cold shower - not going to happen.  I'd rather have dandruff like Ally Sheedy's Breakfast Club character than freeze myself in the shower, lol.

Hahahah! That's kind of what I was thinking when I heard it. I think they meant to wash it in the sink or something but I HAVE to wash my hair with hot water lol

  • Weird that you posted this b/c I was thinking about posting, too. I never hand dandruff until after I had DS. It's right on the very top of my head, near my forehead. It's gross & annoying & I'm really glad I don't leave the house too often, lol!

  • Crud, I had half a bottle if the Aveda stuff I think I just tossed or would have sent it to you. It's tad pricey but lasts a while. It worked well for me a few years ago though. I've had pretty decent luck with a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I've been using Frederic Fekkai Shea for about a year now. I pay about $20 at Target for it but it also lasts quite a while.

  • I have had a flaky scalp in very specific spots for as long as I can remember.  The dermatologist has looked at it several times over he years, and the answer is basically always the same: switch off using head and shoulders and selsun blue, using each one 1 - 2 times a week.  I've been doing this for years and it keeps things under control very well.  If I get lazy and use regular shampoo too many days in a row, holy itchy-ness!!! . (so yes, I have 3 shampoos in my shower just for me..)  I do one day regular shampoo, then H & S, regular, SB, regular, and so on.
